I understand the main point in question,
• that continued breeding of anything other than breed standard colour means the GSD may end up not looking like the GSD does now
• by breeding purely for colour can mean some breeders are looking at colour as the main breeding factor rather than other important factors in breeding so there may be health issues
Re point 1- if the GSD ends up looking different from how it does now due to different colours being bred then what exactly is the problem in this? If the colours being bred are naturally occuring colours in the GSD gene pool then who's to say that they are less of a GSD then a black and tan? Just because a GSD conventionally looks the colour it is just now doesnt mean thats the only way it can look. You only have to look at old pictures and youtube video footage to see how much the dog has changed over the years anyway regardless of colour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRU8UdMnssU
Things change, thats the purpose of evolution. If people were chemically or falsely making GSD's become different coloured I'd have an issue but if the colour is just something that can happen then why should we have a problem with that? Variety is the spice of life or so they say. If you prefer black and tans stick with black and tans, if you prefer Livers stick with Livers, if you prefer Cavalier King Charles spaniels then get one of them! If you dont really care and just want a companion pet thats healthy and loving and you come across a white GSD then get that. Whatever floats your boat!
Re point 2- you get breeders of "conventional colours" breeding for looks as their main priority right now rather than looking at health factors as their main focus point also. It happens anyway, regardless of colour. Surely breeders of coloured GSD's, if truly interested in the health of the breed, would look at health factors first and foremost anyway? If they dont then they are just as unscrupulous as those breeders who breed conventional coloured Sheps without doing all testing anyway.
Maybe if GSD's were accepted as GSD's regardless of their colour and more for their heritage then this would ensure that breeders of colour have more of a pool to choose from in breeding meaning the health factors are more likely taken into account before breeding rather than just the colour of the dog they breed with?
If you know of a dog thats been bred where all checks have been done prior to breeding, its healthy and is from good pedigree stock then what the heck is the problem?! 2 black humans can have a white baby same as 2 white humans can have a black one. Its no less of a child just because something in its genes from way back affects its colour just as a GSD is no less of a GSD if its a colour not classed as "acceptable" by the Great Powers that decided what should or shouldnt be breed standard.
Gayvilles Nilo is the breed record holder with 52 CC's. Should he never have been born then because his sire carried the blue gene? Should INT CH Rosehurst Chris have been neutered and all those wonderful dogs that came from his line never been born?

Pridhams, your last post to Pam: I can barely make out the meaning in your text, Wildmoor.
Unfortunately you appear to have lost the concepts of grammar and sentence construction, but I can just about make out what a vituperous, spiteful and nasty piece of work you are.
How sad that you have nothing in your life other than to try to diminish others in order to jolly yourself along.
Have (another) drink, Wildmoor, swallow your bullshit along with it, take your sleeping pills and get yourself off to bed.
Maybe you'll feel better in the morning.
Then you might want to reflect a little on how attempting to make the world an uncomfortable place for others who don't share your ideals has resulted in you turning into a miserable, lonely old bitch.
What an appalling post! I'm ashamed and embarrassed for you!
Uber... yes, Uran produced blues... and more! But nobody took their bitch to him with the sole intention of producing blues! Many breeders have had blues and (less frequently) livers over the years, but they don't TRY to produce these colours! I don't know ANYONE who breeds JUST for colour, no, not even rich black & red, it would be hugely detrimental to the breed... that's obvious, isn't it? Responsible breeders consider everything BEFORE they breed. If non standard colours pop up, they're sold to pet homes with registration endorsements, not killed.

PRIDHAMS, sickening post, unwarranted and totally out of order. To resort to such comments says more about you as a person than anything else. What is it that some of you don't get when BREED STANDARD is quoted? You can talk all day about what YOU think of non standard colours, and the breed standard, the FACT remains there IS a STANDARD which is there for a reason and we should all be aspiring to it. If we all did our own thing and bred whatever we liked, I hate to even think what state the breed would be in.
To the poster who said 2 white humans can produce a black baby and vice versa, how often does this occur? Certainly not at the rate these breeders who ONLY concentrate on colour are producing. I have nothing against a colour of a dog, but I most certainly do for the breeders who pump them out year in and year out and try to justify it to all the GSD breeders who follow the correct standard, health testing and do something with their dogs other than breed to produce these colours to make a buck and exploit the pet puppy buying public who think it's cute to own a blue, liver, white, champagne etc. etc,

Pridhams-i know full well that the gurneys woman is following this thread,so tell her to defend her disgusting actions, would be a complete waste of time though, how the hell can you defend using a bitch who has shot hips ?!!!!!!!!perhaps she needs to try and recoup some of her monetry losses by importing these liver dogs,or perhaps she uses Melissa as her mentor-what a scary prospect !!!!!!

Naturaly occuring dilutes in litters happens and these pups are put up with endoesements or papers withheld, not culled here in the UK. it's not the colour thats a problem it's people using these dogs for breeding perpouse of making money and giving themselves a pat on the back while they do it, Joe public is the ones that suffer with there lack of knowledege
