I do not know the effects experienced in other breeds but it may be interesting to find out, if possible, the number of cases say 10 years ago, 5 years ago and the latest information in order to get some idea of the rate of progression in the incidences of the disease. Perhaps mortality rates should also be looked at for the same period. It may be that the BVA or the KC can provide some statistics.
If we believe David Payne when he says that he knows the identity of affected animals but has been sworn to secrecy then the UK is in the same position now as it was in the early seventies when epilepsy, haemophilia etc received the same attitude. It is not the breed that counts but the individuals concerned in covering their traces. The reputation of the people that have sworn David Payne to secrecy can only be enhanced by being open and honest in these matters. Whilst I agree that revealing something given in confidence should not normally be done there are situations like this one where an agreement to secrecy should not be given and I am surprised that David has entered into that arena. It is vital that the identity of affected animals is in the public domain.
I hope the BC pick up on JRD and try to arrange something to help breeders reduce the cost of the tests and collate the information for the benefit of the breed and breeders. When the time comes I will test for JRD.

Please stop using the words "secrecy" as if it is an offense. Keeping things confidential and private is a common practice within GSD circles. Indeed many GSD kennels believe that "silence" is the best policy, and who can blame them, with the hoards of morons surfing around the Internet in disguise.
And Mackenzie, don't you dare criticise my afforded confidentiality in any circumstances. And don't advise me to break confidentiality. Up to that point your post was well considered. You will understand that to a very large extent individual breeders can protect their own kennel from JRD.

All I can say is that TRUST and HONOUR plays a very big part when an organisation considers the granting of a license to another organisation. They have to be CERTAIN that they receive ALL the "royalties" for ALL tests done by the "licensed organisation".

Bazza I heartily agree with that sentiment.
Trust should be a valued thing and it is all too easy nowadays to blurt out something which was given in confindence.
This is where Chinese whispers come in and the 'truth' or original comments are distorted and misleading.
I believe if someone has trusted one enough to say something 'private' then that is exactly how it should stay.
Even if it to the detrement, it is NOT upto the person who was gifted with this knowledge but upto the person who has given the knowledge. On their concience it should rest.
Trust is hard to gain and all too easy to through away or lose.
Anyone who can keep a faith during times were they are being belittled for keeping silent deserves a pat on the back from me.
Frank
PS I would hope that the people concerned with giving this trust, read this post and think more deeply about maybe coming out and allowing it to be discussed for the sake of the breed. If there is nothing to tell then so be it, but if there is....................????
Surely privacy should NOT be an issue in this subject. Anyone who has any knowledge of dogs who are suffering, carrying or goodness knows what needs to say so, this way we can irradicate or control a problem before it takes over and becomes a larger more serious problem. I am meaning any disorder, NOT just JRD. Could be EPI, Epilepsy, absolutely anything. We have a duty of guardianship for the breed and we will be doing it an injustice by ignoring it, sweeping it under the carpet or worse keeping important knowledge secret.

I’m of the opinion that you want to have an affair with me, giving me all this wonderful publicity both verbal with anyone you can find to listen to you and your verbal diarrhea, and all this free advertising, if you are on the turn and have found puberty, which is what happens to a few in later life, when the hospital makes a mistake at birth and throws the baby away and gives the world the afterbirth, as in your case, I’m sure somewhere in the yellow pages you will find an organization that will give you the help you need along with your other problem, you know the one, you walk about your property in your short crop top as no one can find a size to fit you, sucking your thumb planning your next move on anyone who dares not to heed to you, while waiting for your next clean nappy,
As I’ve told you before David, I’m Graham Martin and not JJ, and yes you told me about your friends in the Mafia, that’s the MAFIA which you said got you and only you to help them take over the US Car Industry, coming to get me and how your going to take my house off me, and I’ll be living in a cardboard box.
Well as you feel so strongly about my identity of me bring this JJ, you should take all your wonderful money, your always on about and without delay take me to court and prove to yourself and all that I’m this JJ.
Now is the time for you to put up or shut up.
Or if you wish you can do one of two things in the way of your apologises to me and to all the others you have wronged over the years with your verbal diarrhea.
1, Instead of wasting all your wonderful money, taking me to court for someone I’m not, and making yourself look a bigger fool then your looking like at this moment in time,
I’ll let you donate a sum to the GSD Welfare Fund.
2. You could go and crawl back under that stone you crawled out off.
So David, I am Graham Martin and I may well be a snap happy moron, but I'm not JJ, maybe you should look a bit closer within your very close circle.
So who will be knocking on my door first, you’re Solicitor or the Mafia.
I’ll put the kettle on then, shell I.
Graham Martin
PS. Don’t come back with your CRAP and LIES, keep it on your feet, SUCKER.
But you are right David,
JRD is NOT a complicated disease.
“But you are”
