My pup Flex and I are headed into the vet in about an hour to have his blood checked for any signs of tick bites and so she can verify my results of the proprioception test in the mean time while we wait for results my vet is going to call the oklahoma state University vet and brief them on his condition.

Good deal, nick. I should have asked about your boy's proprioception earlier...would have eliminated lots of speculation since you first posted.

Jenni, re Mars/Banfield/Blue Pearl, you hit the nail on the head. That's why the link I posted is for a specific vet's page on the vet hospital's website.

I went in search of a board-certified neurologist in private practice in the Oklahoma City area, and there aren't any; the closest I could get was someone with a lot of CE in neurology, specifically spinal disorders, and a lot of experience with spinal conditions both in the teaching hospital as well as in private practice--with the added bonus of being an author of two peer-reviewed & published papers on the subject of two different spinal procedures. We already know that going out of state is out of the question for several reasons, and if getting a referral or consult with OSU wasn't going to be in the cards, this guy would probably be the next best option.

So I went to the regular vet last week and she prescribed me RIMADYL 75mg on behalf of the University vet he is going to see in a few weeks. Well I have to say that this drug is amazing, I have a puppy again and a big one at that. I can not believe the difference in him from these pills he is playful and getting around without any pain and even letting me mess with his hind quarters. I spoke with the vet about and now they are recommending pushing back the University appointment and seeing how he is after a while on these meds, what is everyone else's thoughts on this.

Great Idea just don't stay on it to long or push him into to much exercise. Let him set the pace there.

I would not push back the vet visit you need to find the reason for the pain.

Finally on the right track

Nick, I don't get it. I specifically asked a few pages ago what NSAIDS you'd tried/anti-inflammatories to try to figure out if it's something painful like pano which was a quick first guess for a huge, male puppy, or even CE (unusual at his age) and you said it made no difference. Now Rimadyl is helping but it didn't before?? I'm confused.

Jenni78, we have tried other NSAID and we had nothing help him but the vet from the University wanted him to try these drugs before we brought him to his appointment.

Agree with Western Rider - don't push back the appointment! You need to find the reason for the problems he's having, so it can be addressed. The NSAIDS just mask the pain.
