Working line cross - Page 10

This thread has gone beyond ridiculous, if I read one more word about Hitler, Jews, Blacks, Whites, Racists it's gone. This is my 2nd but final warning NO MORE FFS, crazy !!!!!

I have no intention of wasting my time cleaning up all that crap I can't believe I've just read so get back on topic......NOW!!!!!!!!

getting back on topic, if possible I have never done a wl/sl cross. I did seriously consider it. My female had for most pretty impressive credentials, went to Germany and interviewed quite a few cantidates to find her, the stud one of the top w/l to come to the U.S. V rated and very impressive work, at least for me.

In the end it came down to seriously examining why I wanted to breed at all and being realistic about what I wanted to accomplish. I really don't like breeding, don't need to supplement my income and from past experience have found that getting even one puppy that really measures up to expectations is not as simple as it might seem. Unless one has pretty low expectations.

So why did I consider it at all. Not sure. For what it cost to breed, I can find a dog that I know is going to be what I want.

People should get what adds to their enjoyment of life. If it's sl, wl, asl, cross and don't worry about what other people enjoy. And don't get over cranked if what I like is maybe not so much what you like.

Like a great football coach once said "if you start listening to the fans in the stands it won't be long till you are sitting up there with them."

When you consider crossing WL and SL, then "WL" and "SL" are too broad categories as there is quite a bit of variation within each category.
A cross between a WGWL dog bred for low threshold for high arousal would be a terrible match for even a stable ASL dog as the ASL side could not support the temperament. But a high threshold mostly DDR dog could go well with a stable ASL dog. A cross between stable WGSL and any working line should be a stable dog. 
The most important thing is that both dogs are rock solid stable. But that applies to any breeding.
And please consider the market or lack of market for puppies from these crosses before breeding. Experienced breeders who through hard work and success have established a reputation can sell puppies from WL/SL crosses. Puppies from unknown breeders usually end up in the low tier puppy market. I own an excellent WL/SL GSD who, among with six others, was surrendered to breed rescue by an inexperienced breeder b/c he couldn't sell and didn't want his dogs to end up on nextdaypuppies etc. My GSD is a cross of top WGWL (Gildo, Arek, Troll, Oberhausener Kreuz, Antverpa, Karthago, KNPV Haus Larwin), DDR (Gräfental/Haus Himpel), WGSL (Bullinger/Kirschental), and ASL (going back to Bodo Lierberg in USA), and a bit of pet GSD. 
The responsible thing to do is to work and show your dogs, get your dogs known for quality, work with an experienced breeder as a mentor, and then breed.
And why do you want to  commit to buying a stud when you don't have the experience yet? Better work with an experienced breeder and use her/his stud to begin with. 
Btw, Kirschental was a cross between SL and WL. But Karl Fuller didn't just cross dogs. He had produced several HGH sieger before crossing with SL dogs.
To sum it up, I don't think you should breed until you have proven yourself and your dogs and have others see them, and not b/c it would  be 'crossing the lines'.

IMO, the last pragraph of previous post sums it all up. Also the 3rd last paragraph is excellent advice. Oops, Gustav beat me to it - I am referring to Schaeferhund1's post above.

The title was working line cross not wl/sl cross. :-) I was approached st a seminar by someone wanting to breed his stud to my bitch for a pup. After further discussion and some phone calls I decided to do it. Stud is 11yrs old and i have not seen him work but i did see a son of his work at this seminar. Pups are 3 weeks old now. Looks like an interesting breeding, eisenhaus...  At coming on 12 years of age, it's understandable if you weren't able to see him work, and the longevity he's enjoying is quite an asset. Something tells me you may produce another top-caliber dog or several out of this combination...I wish you all the good fortune possible with them. :)
