Carlin,
That is why you need to do a lot research and network. The best way is to decide what type of dog you want than visit the clubs, shows, trials and talk to people. Get references and check them. Google the breeders name, the kennel name and see what pops up. I would also check with the AKC, OFA and the Rip off report. Find some people that you feel comfortable with and ask them questions. If you spend time here reading the threads and the responses; you will get a feel for people, trust your instincts. Ask a lot of questions and if possible visit the breeder and kennel before you are ready to purchase. I understand your concern, purchasing a dog is a big decision and you want to deal with a reliable, ethical and honest breeder. They are out there, good luck in your quest.

Caleb? he doesn't have breedable hips.... I remember long time ago, they could not pass. Why would anybody breed a dog with non-passing hips! Jenni... not a good move if that is the truth...

I think the issue may have been just been age/high activity level related, or she just didn't bother to send them to OFA. I am sure Caleb's hips are wonderful, I do remember a thread about his hips from her but i don't remember anything about them being bad in any way. I am sure she will enlighten us about them if she reads this thread again. I will see if i can find the thread.
And also RS as far as Isachev if you look at Caleb's pedigree, (he is a DDR dog i am told), you could assume he is at least partially Czech bred :) I personally don't know enough about pedigree's to comment too much further though. I know she will breed only Quality dogs, she doesn't care if it is West, East, Czech or whatever. And she does own or did own a Czech male.

Nadeem did you see the x-rays?

by Nadeem6 on 09 January 2012 - 00:01
I thought she had posted them in a thread GSDPACK but i could be absolutely wrong, just going on memory.
If she didn't post them then absolutely 'No i did not see the X-rays,' -- but i of course I can't read them that well anyway so it wouldn't matter. But i do trust her enough to take some things at her word.
And also i wasnt getting a Caleb pup so i wasn't paying too much attention to them.

Nadeem,
unless you see the hips or rating, it is just someones word against the OFA!... or SV.. or lazyness to send the x-rays someplace! Sorry not convincing me and I tell you, many others!

Looks like "Caleb" is half DDR half Czech according to this site.
I cannot fathom someone breeding a dog with hips that would not pass OFA,
no matter what reason they could drum up as to why a dog can't/won't pass OFA.
But thats me.
Come on, after just having a 20+ page thread on a dog with essentially NO hips,
isn't that reason enough alone to ensure you only use dogs that have super health overall?
Surely he can't be THAT perfect that hips that won't pass OFA means it can be overlooked? wow.
I guess this explains the disdain and utter disregard that "Caleb's" owner has for OFA.
Well, until the dog she bought went OFA Excellent, then she started a brag thread about that.
So I guess it depends?
No, I won't mention said poster's name again, evidently someone cried to a moderator that she was being picked on?
Not at all, just stating fact that has been written by her. Oh well.

THIS has got to be some of the best advice written!
Do some legwork, google google google, and get out to the dog clubs that do the activity that interest you.
If you want American or German Showlines, go to clubs that specialize in that venue, same as Schutzhund etc.

I don't normally post on this site for several reasons,
people making comments about others such as this one:
please dear Herd with GS. come over oh please do. You must be very young or perhaps you are not too old to learn about what is a life. :)
Jen is actually a dear friend here and in real life too.
Now lets all try to play nice, OK?

Sable go to Westwood and watch them work there dogs. How many do they compete with and title or train their selves this is how you judge their dogs. People who just buy and resale are not dog trainers or breeders . You can have a hundred litters a year and that does not make you a breeder, just a producer. When you keep puppies in a bar all together for months on end with no socialization and training waiting on a buyer then you are no better than a puppy mill. I will never forget what a prominent German breeder told me one time: If buy age 7 weeks my pups are not sold I will find nice homes to give them to, they are like produce they will spoil like many tomatoes. They need training and a life .......... |

Why would someone breed Caleb? Because he comes from a long line of dogs with great hips and he is still at his age an agile athletic dog bred to a Koerklassed female with WUSV ch on both sides. Why? Because Caleb has the the most magnificent character you could ever want. He is powerful, civil, and yet so well balanced. He is like the dogs of old who can really work, who really bite, who really have the instinct and judgment and heart and absolute courage that is so rare. Not everyone could handle a Caleb but if you are lucky enough to have a Caleb pup or be loved by Caleb, you are a lucky person indeed. He is the one exception I would ever make regarding the ratings. I have seen many OFA excellent dogs at his age that are not as agile and athletic and because of a prelim due to injury given his lineage and the hips on both sides and given his absolutely heroic heart and power to back it up, even Jen's other female, the mother of my pup also with Quasy a WUSV winner and herself KKL1 rated and titled, it was CALEB that made me want a puppy. Caleb with Dargo and Caleb with Grimm and Xero, Caleb with Caleb's wonderful old world stability courage and character. THAT is why.

Hunger4justice....
I am going to be very straight forward...... I don't care if a dog poops golden nuggets, till he passes hips, he should never be bred. That is UNETHICAL!!!!!!
