I'm not going to revive a dead thread, but on an earlier thread, Joan asked me how I could hold Trump responsible for the 290,000 people in the U.S. who have died from COVID-19.
In 1997, an Avian flu virus spread from poultry to humans. It was very virulent, and caused many deaths. The WHO and the United States increased pandemic preparedness planning. In 2005, a national pandemic response plan was developed: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/national-strategy/index.html
For those of you who think this virus was engineered in a lab, no, that did not happen. Every serious pandemic in human history jumped from animals to humans. Ebola came from...guess where? BATS! Most of the serious flu pandemics have been traced to farm animals like chickens and pigs. The bubonic plague of the middle ages came from fleas carried by rats. A strain of corona virus (MERS) in Saudi Arabia was spread by camels! https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/mers/faq.html
The reason these viruses are so serious when they jump species is the human immune system has never encountered them before, and has no natural defences. It's also the reason so many indigenous people perished from diseases like measles that were brought to the Americas by Europeans. Those diseases were new to the native people, and their immune systems had no defence against them.
When Trump took over in 2016, the Obama administration actually held a pandemic preparedness training day. This was the response of the incoming government: https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-appointees-trained-pandemic-response-in-2016-2020-3
In 2018, Trump disbanded the White House Pandemic Response team.
In 2019, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) epidemiologist embedded in China’s disease control agency left her post, and the Administration decided to eliminate the role.
When the COVID virus began to show up in the States, Trump brushed it off:
"We have it totally under control It's one person coming from China" he said (January 22nd).
He also praised China's President XI for his handling of the virus: “China has been working very hard to contain the Coronavirus. The United States greatly appreciates their efforts and transparency. It will all work out well. In particular, on behalf of the American People, I want to thank President Xi!” (January 24th)
What he didn't know was that China had already discovered the virus could be spread from person to person, and despite that, they had permitted huge celebrations to take place for the Chinese New Year on January 25th. People travelled from all over to attend celebrations with friends and families, and the whole thing was the first superspreader event.
On January 28th, his national security advisor told him: "This will be the biggest national security threat you face in your presidency...This is going to be the roughest thing you face"
Unfortunately, Trump is well know for not paying attention to briefings: https://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/trump-briefings-232479
So, when trade advisor Peter Navarro told him on January 30th, "The lack of immune protection or an existing cure or vaccine would leave Americans defenseless in the case of a full-blown coronavirus outbreak on US soil,...This lack of protection elevates the risk of the coronavirus evolving into a full-blown pandemic, imperiling the lives of millions of Americans.” he was pretty much ignored.
Trump did shut down air travel from China on January 31st, BUT what he didn't do was start screening air passengers (American citizens) who were returning from China. Some 40,000 passengers came to the States from COVID hotspots without being screened in early February.
On January 7th, Trump had that now-famous interview with Bob Woodward, in which he admitted: “It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu... This is deadly stuff” Yet, on February 26th, he claimed:"This is a flu. This is like a flu."
I could go on, but I'm sure you're getting the general idea. By March, when things really started to get bad, the country began to face shortages of personal protective equipment and vital medical equipment such as respirators. The whole country was caught flat-footed. This all could have been avoided if Trump had paid attention to his advisors, and instituted the pandemic response plan. It was all laid out for them in black and white, from this risk assessment tool to gauge the seriousness of a threat: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/pdf/mmwr-rr6306.pdf to a detailed response plan: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/pdf/pandemic-influenza-implementation.pdf
One of the things stressed in the response plan was the need for well-defined leadership. Everyone needs to know who is in charge of what, so that needs and concerns can be quickly and efficiently addressed. This did not happen. Instead, Trump appointed a team headed by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Jared has no experienc in public health, nor did any other members of the team.
The sensible thing to do would have been to put the CDC in charge. They had the expertise, they wrote the pandemic playbook, they were the logical choice.
Kushner's appointment led to mass confusion. States like New York were desperate for PPE, and stories began to emerge of shipments designated for needy areas being hijacked and redirected. https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-jared-kushner-shadow-task-force-cause-confusion-report-2020-3
It was a textbook example of how NOT to manage a pandemic.

I dont know what others feel about this virus, I am not here to change anyone's mind, but, two of my people at work had it, my in-laws currently have it, my 19 year old son had it, on his birthday, and my cousin died because of it. Is it real? Some of you need to tell me because I have lived it first hand.
