The person who mentioned that dogs which had never been trained in bitework have still gone for her forearms was me. One was a GSD and one was a Rottweiler, whose heights may partly explain why they did not attack my legs ...(the collie-x who last bit me, before these examples, tried to get at my left calf !)

I get what Centurian says. That is why instead of 'guessing' at "dominant OR fearful" when this thred started I thought about what I might be seeing, and how much information was provided.
Dunno about "dog whispering", I think I could give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money sometimes, LOL !

Yes its in France, yes they have Ring, yes apparently Pupier has been seen competing in Ring. Does any of this mean the dog is Ring-trained ? Not necessarily. (You can do IPO here in the south of England, but I can count the number of dogs currently training/competing on my 20 digits, probably.) As with GSDs, (in England or France) - there are a hell of a lot of Belgian Shepherds (variety: Malinois) owned by French people, the majority of which will not be doing Ring or anything resembling it.

What are the two commands this dog does (almost) unhesitatingly obey for Pupier ? Sit and Down.
What are the first two commands taught at Puppy Obedience and by pet trainers ? Sit and Down.
How often do pet dogs go on to be taught to walk to Heel, by even committed & responsible owners, anywhere in the world ? Not very.

Now, I hope Glock, having posted the video, knows more about what it was meant to be showing us, and comes back here to tell us; or that someone with better French than mine takes it on themself to contact Mssr Pupier and ask him direct.

Glock likes to put up controversial videos to set the board on fire. Like mithuna.
So probably won't come back til he 'finds another one'.

Looking up Glock's User Info, = naive questions & comments: check; some worrying troubles with own dog: check; videos: not so much, this is the only one (well, two if you count that 2nd thing) that he's placed.

In fact, come to think of it, he writes much as I would expect someone in precisely the position I speculated on to do.

Does not prevent him coming back and telling us - if he knows any more about it - what is the background to this video, and his question about what we see in it.

I am not telling anyone else what they should think about this dog; I am simply outlining what I personally see as a possibility (nay, probability); and suggesting that we could all "think outside the box".

There are trainers who can re-educate dogs - and their owners - in the situation of a dog getting 'above itself' following less-than-stellar management at home.  Sometimes the situation demands re-homing with someone more able to cope, if the dog remains unreliably aggressive.

I forgot to state in writing my posts .. I never went to see any other videos. The reason is that the first video disgusted me. I believe I had the mind that Valk has stated clearly . This was a foolish scenario to have put that dog into that scenario and in a manner a bit of an insensitive to the needs of that dog. I had enough after seeing that video ., no need for me to have seen any more of the like [ possibly]. As the expression goes .. there is no cure for stupidity ... Personally , I never ever ever , ' try' my dog ! If I don't know my dog , don't know what it will or not do .. then I have no business putting that bog into that situation never mind , trying anything..

BTW ... for novices : always set your dog up to be successful and never put your dog into a position that you yourself cannot fairly intelligently predict the outcome of the behavior of the dog .. As I wrote .. I always try to learn from every person and dog ... not simply what to do , but at times , like that 1st video , what not to do ... Don't know Glock , but I think many people can a lot from this thread .. : as I often say ... ' the dog is doing well and just fine , it is the people/owners that I worry about ' !

by joanro on 02 May 2018 - 14:05

People always said mithuna posted questions that others could learn from as well.

However, both appear to be newbs playing the board. And both reference 'breeders' they spoke to on the phone to validate their opinion.

Centurian, I expect you are right about that, as far as the methods for 'problem solving' attempts go.

However, we do not know that this wasn't a first introduction between a now desperate owner (and his dog) and Pupier as the possible saviour. If the dog is 'inappropriately aggressive' towards all-and-sundry, perhaps the best way was to put a muzzle on him, in those circumstances ... or Pupier might bear the scars !
It is certainly noticeable that Pupier gets the muzzle off the dog as soon as he can trust him to some extent to stop being 'handler aggressive'.

Hope this isn't too Off Topic ! Agree that there are people who perhaps do not know any better, who join the PDB with an apparent wish simply to stir, and 'troll'.

But I also think there are a number of individuals who will come here, even though asking about quite basic things, who want to seem better informed than they already are, because they think it will make them look dog-educated, get members to take them seriously, get people to treat them better; who may in fact have already joined a training club because they primarily want a 'protection' dog (not such a big thing this side of the Pond, I have to point out). They are still 'newbie' owners, or maybe there has been another dog or two in the past, but they want others to believe they are 'experienced'.

I think that is understandable. It's wrong, but it's understandable. Also often has something to do with (mainly male) ego - certainly in Mithuna's case !

Because they do that, does not mean they don't have genuine questions. These may not be terribly sophisticated questions. They may betray their lack of understanding of issues. But I believe they should be answered rather than disregarded, nonetheless. If individual posters do not have time to waste on their posts / feel such queries are themselves time wasting, well there is no compulsion on what we each choose to try to help with.

by Centurian on 02 May 2018 - 16:05

Hund - Yes all kinds of people have all kinds of motives. Every answer opens a door for another question . learning moment.
Personally , I come to the PDB because I enjoy reading other people's thoughts and ideas. I enjoy reading the posts from Duke , Blackmalinois , your's Hund , Susie's , Joanro , Sunsilver , Jessie , Valik ,Prager's , who we haven't heard from in a while and more than I will continue to list. .
I keep in my mind these things : Look , Listen and Learn , from dogs and people alike. At times , If I want to better know or understand a person I look to their dog and If I want to understand a dog I will look to the person. Every dog and person has something to tell me ... And from there on in , I have this mindfulness : ' It is not what others say and do that I need concern myself with, but rather , what I say and do , that is my concern'. All of the people above have posted many many words of wisdom , sometimes agreeing and other times disagreeing. We are lucky to have a GS forum such as this. Many many thousands of people read and never post, some do . So whatever their motives , they either gain or are at a loss. Thank you Hund for sharing your ideas and posts .... Centurian
