I have an opportunity to purchase a nice spayed 1 year old black and red GSD from the Ukraine and I was wondering does anyone have an opinion or any experience with Ukrainian GSD. She will be just a companion dog for my family. Thanks, Mike

mao2 it looks as though you are here in the states. Is the dog in the Ukraine. Have you met her long enough to know her temperament.

If you are not being told the truth a 1 year old can do some damage to a young family member before you can stop it.

The cost of flying a dog of this age size would probably cost a lot more than buying one local that you could visit and this cost still does not include the cost of the dog.

I would venture to say that there are many females here in the states available let alone a retired trained female.

A black and red dog is likely from German show lines. You have to ask yourself: why was she spayed, and why is she up for sale? Is the breeder someone that takes part in SV style shows? If that's the case, this dog probably didn't have what he wanted in the show ring. She could have a timid temperament.

I agree with Western Rider. Don't take the chance on importing a dog from so far away, and then finding out she's not what you want. There are lots of spayed females here to choose from, and you can go and visit them, and assess their temperaments yourself.

Spaying at a year old is FAR too young and can result in major health issues down the road. If you are in the USA, don't bother importing from another country. You're obviously looking for a pet. There are PLENTY here in the USA from either good, ethical breeders or rescues.

Èuropeans don't tend to spay their pure bred dogs without a reason...
1. It's a rescue and the shelter spayed
2. The dog is not suitable for breeding ( but this scenario happens pretty seldom )

I guess the dog in question was imported to the States as a puppy and was spayed in the States...

It's just a guess-maybe the OP is willing to clarify.

The actual pedigree will tell you a lot more about the dog than the country she is coming from.

I'm American, but I lived in Ukraine for many years. I met a lot of Ukrainians I would trust during my time there, and many I wouldn't.

Without some personal connection to the seller, I wouldn't buy a dog from Ukraine. Fraud is just too prevalent there.

Thank you for all your input and advice. I will be purchasing a dog from a local breeder. Thanks again!
