Western Rider

Need some ideas.  Out riding today and found a dumped dog, female of course, covered with ticks. So bad that she hardly has hair.

What product would any suggest.  Would dipping be best or a topical.  She needs help fast.  Just to many to even consider removing them by hand

An insecticidal dip with pyrethrins if she isn't a puppy and ideally, a trip to the vet. Poor dog.

Western

Nexgard kills all adult ticks within 72 hours and Sentinel spectrum stops the post bite life cycle development of both ticks and fleas. I use both products year round ( but no Nexgard december to february ) and in my dog's 30 months of existence I have seen literally only 2 ticks on her. We are in the grassy and forest areas at least 5-6 days a week.

That is awful - poor baby. I am surprised she is alive as just one tick on her back can cause paralysis. Believe it or not we have Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, in addition to Lyme Disease, in South Mississippi. I had used Trifexis (doesn't kill ticks as I'm sure you know) religiously on one of my dogs for years. The dog got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. We caught it early while in fever stage and gave Doxycycline for month. The blood test came back clear after taking the Doxycycline. My vet sees a lot of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever cases and suggested I use Bravecto, which is supposed to last three months. It is scary cause can be transferred to humans, and I worry about my grandchildren. I hate to use any poisons on my dogs, but have discovered sometimes it is necessary. Good luck and lucky dog to have you care enough to help it.

What not to minimize your advise but a few months ago either vk or Bubbabooboo cited some references about canine deaths caused by Bravecto. Our vet here ( Lefferts Animal Hospital ) prefers nexgard. And Im also reporting my own observations of literally 2 ticks in 30 months and we ( me and my dog ) are out side in the grass, thickets, and woods 5-6 days a week all year round.

Thanks Mithuna. Anything that stays in a dog's system for three months has got to be pretty potent. I hate to give my dogs any kind of poisons (including heartworm medicines). I do use Nexgard on my four month old puppy (different vet/clinic) and have thought about using it on my other dogs. Not quiet sure why my most knowledgable vet is recommending Bravecto over Nexgard unless he is getting some kinda kickback (just can't see him recommending it for that reason though). The Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever episode has definitely put me in a tizzy over what to use on older dogs.

Hint Wheat:

Look at the comparative costs :

1 Bravecto tab for a 44-88 lbs dog last for 90 days and costs $46

1 Nextgard tab for a 60-121 lb dog lasts for 30 days and costs $( 62/3) = 20.6

Therefore a 90 day supply of of Bravecto is (62-46) = $16 cheaper than a supply of Nexgard the same duration.

Maybe your vet wants to save you $$.

How is the dog doing? Are the ticks off?

Just came home and as I drove up guess who had gotten out of her kennel while I was away and ran up to  greet me. So proud of herself.

I could not wait two days to get the Nexgard so sprayed her down until I did get the Nexgard.

Her crate was full of the little seed tick the next morning.  I did get the Nexgard and now almost all the ticks a gone.

Now to get some hair on her instead of scabs and cross my fingers she is not pg, but then if I can't keep her in a kennel my boys will introduce themselves. lol
