I have a male here that I recently saw has 2 small raw looking spots on his testicles. I don't see him licking at them, and when I manipulate the area, it doesn't seem to bother him. The spots don't have any pus that I can see, they are just a little weepy. He is acting normal and eating fine. Any ideas as to what it could be?

Since there is no other trauma or infection, perhaps they are merely scrapes. Has the dog been lying on concrete surfaces? Barring any complications, I would just treat this with a triple antibiotic salve and keep an eye on it. It will probably never happen again. Bob-O

Male dogs seem to be prone to contact dermatitis on their scrotums. I'd treat as Bob-O suggested. If that doesn't work, it might be a fungus so you will need something other than an antibiotic.A medicated powder might help too, Gold Bond or one used to treat jock itch if the antibiotices don't help. First do no harm LOL. If he's a kennel dog, you might have to change your disinfectant if it comes back or won't heal. If he's on cement, try to make sure the area is dry before you let him return to the area. Straw or other bedding could also be the culprit. If he spends a lot of time sitting on cement, you might want to give him an old blanket or rug to sit on making sure it is well rinsed and free of any detergent. It sounds like a minor problem now, but don't let you guard down as I've seen this escalate into a much bigger problem. Not lifethreatening, but I'm sure a dog with a sore, swollen scrotum often wishes he were dead.

I once had a male do this same thing when one of our females went into season. When her heat was over the problem went away. Kyle

It could also be a burn - do you clean your kennels with bleach or something similar? I had an incident once when I was taking care of a Keeshond kennel - I cleaned the kennels with a bleach/water mixture, then rinsed with water - but there must have been a spot that wasn't rinsed properly, as one of the males got his testicals pretty seriously burned and raw. He recovered, but it was definately a lesson learned (by me on how to be more careful when using bleach) molly

He is actually inside most of the time so no chance of burning. Thanks everyone, I will keep an eye on it.
