Instead of posting on another thread, decided to start this one, and see what people define or see a "back yard breeder" as.
Thoughts?
Someone with a Lot of bitches - I am talking about 10 or more, with a couple back-to-back breedings on their website. They seem legit, but to me it really looks shady especially if they say they are a "hobby kennel", and not doing it for the money. Obviously they are.

A non kennel, people who don't hip score, vaccinate, worm, or even have a theory or plan about their breedings. Hey we have 2 of the same kinda dog, lets let em get it on! This is a BYB. If your not sure what lines your dogs have and what they represent, your a backyard breeder. If you breed your bitch until her uterus falls out, your a BYB. If you stud out your dog without having him checked out, your a BYB. If you don't even know what socialization or imprinting is, your a BYB. If you sell your puppies to anyone with the cash, your a BYB and last but not least, if you do all of these things, your a total loser!
IMO its those people who advertise in the paper who cant spell German Shepherd right, but are selling puppies @ $900 each, just for bucks. Also what schauspielkunst said too.
Jeez, my husband works with this guy who has a pit bull that is really skittish. He mentioned to my hubby the other day that he is hoping to "breed" her. After being in shepherds as long as we have, and doing right even when noone is looking (ethics, ethics!) he was like "What!" cuz that dog did not have the temperment charactoristics we are so anal retentive about in our dogs.
4pack hit it right on. That is a BYB. Even having one bitch can be considered a BYB under the wrong circumstances.
a byb advertises in the local "penny saver" w/pups for $500 to $1200 w/no shots, worming, etc. they also love to expose their kids to "the miracle of birth". i wish they would also show them the ugliness of euthanasia when the dogs are sold to people who don't know what to do with a gsd. they keep them isolated in a backyard til they turn frustrated, aggressive and neurotic. alot of people think a good breeder is too expensive, but you get the assurance of quality and help if you need it. byb's think their dogs should breed because they're "pretty"; they don't consider physical or temperment issues. these guys take the money and the door is then closed. it's about the money.
I vote for 4pack's definition. That covers it all.
4pack nailed it right on the head.
4Pack did pretty good there, just don't forget that a lot of "byb's" who get by on this website especially are much more subtler. Sure, they seem to just breed SchH dog to SchH dog, but I seen a lot of "connoiseurs" of GSD's who got to have the hot item dogs on the front page of their kennel. Along with 15 bitches to breed him to.
