We are picking up our new pup today, the owners have said he is a mix of Australian and German Shepard but after doing my research as I have had GSD my whole life, he looks like a purebred GSD with Liver/Tan coloring due to recessive genetic traits that have narrowed out the black pigment. Any opinions on what you guys think? I just want to be sure of the dogs breed 100% it won't cause me not to get him but he will be enrolled in training to become my PTSD service dog from the military so just want to know what we are working with. Thanks everyone in advance!!

Great cross!
From the little shown of him in this angle, he appears to be red Merle from the Aussie side. In my opinion, the Aussie is equivalent to the Arabian horse in that they cross very well with all breeds, usually bringing trainability, strong nreves and biddability.
Good luck, and enjoy...great choice for your needs.

He doesn't look merle at all to me. From the looks of it, I would guess him to be a liver GSD.

Easy to train and a great dog for intelligence ( of course all dogs are intelligent ). Not a liver GSD .. the ears are not GSD and the coat color isn't liver ... blonde. The dog will lighten and be blonde in areas as an adult. He may get very light blonde in areas with sunlight exposure in the summers. Should be a handsome dog and super intelligent if you help him reach his potential. The liver leather on the nose (and paws ??) will darken and is not uncommon in Aussies .. The liver color in GSD is caused by a dilution gene. In GSD the liver color is black dilution.

Red Merle.

Would more pictures help? I see where Red Merle is but I also see more dominate traits of a GSD, either way Gunner is going to make an excellent addition to our family and will become a great service dog. Thanks everyone for the help, by all means opinions are still greatly appreciated as I've had a lot tell me GSD and few tell me mix of Aussie and German.

He will be a 'keeper' for sure!
A standing side view would be nice to see, just for fun. I have known many aussie x gsd...great dogs. Best dog I ever owned was an Aussie x Sib husky.
I could be wrong about the Merle on the muzzle and legs, if not, it will get more pronounced with age.

What's the average size if he is a mix? My GSD surpassed what they said he would be but I'm just curious on how big we can expect him to get?

He will be whatever size he turns out to be. :-) my aussie x husky was 75 pounds.
