I have a question before I bring my Male to the vet in Morning. I was playing around on the floor with my 3 year old male Shepherd and I saw that he was real red all around his lower stomach, as I looked closer it almost looks like he has ring worm! I just started him on wheat germ oil this week and thought maybe he was having a reaction. he acts normal and keeps playing around like nothing is bothering him. Any thoughts or suggestions? I have not changed his food or anything for that matter, only the wheat germ oil was added this week for his dry skin.. Thanks, Dave

does it look round? sometimes if a dog has a skin infection and the pustules have ruptered it can have the appearance that ringworm would have in a human.

Rez, It looks round in 2 places, the size of a quarter, but then it looks all red (no rings) around his upper thighs and stomach. The ring looking things are on each side of the penis. He has it nowhere else other than that area.

probably a skin infection from the sounds of it. ringworm wouldn't be in so many places. a pustule that has ruptured could look like the quarter thing that you are describing. on of my girls gets skin infections on her belly in the summer when she is constantly wet from playing in the muck and water. you may want to have your vet look at it. as your dog may need antibiotics. where the redness and ring looking things are can be typical for a skin infection. do you think that your dog may have been exposed to anyone with ringworm?

I don't think he has been around anybody with ring worm. He stays in the house and nobody here has it. I'll take him to the vet tomorrow and have him checked. Thanks for your response. Dave

I dealt with ringworm about 3 yrs ago. My daughter brought home a 'cute little puppy' that had it. By the time we figured it out, it was too late. It can show up in several places on the body at once. The dogs generally don't show a definite 'ring' like on human skin. I did notice that when it appeared on a bony part of their body, it first appeared like a swollen lump...then spread out..hair loss in the middle...circular in shape. Dry flaky skin in the center. The vet will do a skin scrape and check it under a wood lamp to determine if it's ringworm or not. Took SIX MONTHS for me to get rid of it....it is microscopic so it's hard to deal with. Bleached/lysol'd the shit out of my (new)carpet and ended up having to rip it out as if fell apart. (hardwood floors all the way now!) It sluffs off on the skin particles into the air and can rest anywhere a piece of DUST lands. After spending literally THOUSANDS between both topical and oral meds for dogs and kids, air cleaners, not being able to train, breed or have a social life every cleaning product that had the word "Ringworm" on the label! ...the ONLY thing that finally worked was Lysol in the white can. I became so frustrated (crying every day!) that I took the can and sprayed a spot directly on the skin 3x day. It was GONE in 2 days!!! Dermatologist and vet could NOT believe it! Said they couldn't recommend it (obviously!) but it worked better than anything they had ever seen! All was gone in about a week's time after six months of hell. I don't wish that nightmare on anybody. File this info in the back of your mind if you ever run across someone who has it. It will save them time, $$ and their SANITY! :)

Rezkat5, You were right, it was a skin infection. The vet put him on antibiotics and said he could also be allergic to flea bites which we had a problem with this year do to a warmer than normal first half of Winter (Ohio). We also will keep using the frontline. soothersmaylive, I'm glad it wasn't ringworm, that had to be a major pain in the rear.
