Off topic, I know & I apologise,  but it suddenly struck me looking

at this video just how physically similar Ellis is to our own UK Shaun

Ellis, the guy who lives with & documents a wolf pack.  Does anybody

know if they are related ?

There are a lot of good trainers out there, Ellis is one of them. Good video to post here BubbaBoo, shows some basic principles that I feel a lot of the viewers can use.

He is good at explaining things. Very good. Thumbs Up

But come on, guys, tell me I'm not the only one who said "Duh" a few times...isn't it a bit sad people need to order a Michael Ellis DVD to learn how to handle a dog on leash? Where has common sense gone?! Red Smile

The video was 13 minutes and 35 seconds.  I bet none of you or me can get much past Duhhhh in 13 minutes handling a dog and talking to a student in that amount of time .. he is simply the best.  I have been to club days and spent 13 minutes on the field and 6 hours driving from and to the day and listening to BS from people who knew less than I did about my dog.  Nobody can learn a foreign language from watching a DVD either,  you learn by repeating the words and making the connections in your brain and learning how to put the words together.  Then you learn to put the words together fast enough to use them in communication and finally you learn to think in that language.  Michael Ellis teaches people how to think in dog training.  In 13 minutes of that short video he introduced several ideas and concepts that most "so called trainers" would have spent an hour on and still not have got it right.  Ellis does not promote the domination and alpha roll thinking that so many half ass trainers at clubs and training seminars spout.  His training methods are about getting results with a dog that looks forward to training and interactions with their humans.  Watching Ellis videos ingrains in the viewer the techniques and wisdom and openness to the dog's point of view which Michael Ellis exudes along with a building of trust and confidence ( not conflict ) with the individual dog.  How many people get a new dog trained or not and expect the dog to be robotic and mechanical in answering commands known or new in the first few days after coming into this new relationship.  Ellis says "NO" .. first comes trust and confidence then comes cooperation and sharing followed by learning and structure.  Asking too much of a new dog too soon is the mark of a rank amateur and in the short video Michael Ellis showed a new owner and handler with a fresh puppy how to set the table for future success.  Ellis has worked with some of the best and all types of dogs and sports .. he is the best because he is not repeating words that he learned but telling us what he has learned by experience.  Michael Ellis asks a lot from his dogs and he gets a lot because he gives a lot more to the dogs  .... with trust, confidence, and patience combined with an instinctive and reasoned approach to what the dog can be expected to deliver being the power behind his methods.

you spend 13 minutes on a field and are surprised you know more about your own dog than someone who had seen it for 13 minutes?????

now that's a DUH!!!!

where are all these alpha rolling clubs you speak of? Did you make that up or was the last club you visited in 1950.

I would suggest you see the exact opposite to alpha rolling clubs these days.

last seminar I went to the trainer won a worlds I believe, Mia skoger (spl), never mentioned domination and alpha rolls, it was all motivation, confidence and drive building.

chances I stumbled across the only sem that isn't about domination ad alpha rolling, I have never seen any trainer that alpha rolls their dog, the chances?

most clubs I suggest will kick yr ass out for alpha rolling yr dog.

I advocate that all new trainers and owners should study Michael Ellis and his methods before ever going to a club.  Then when the club trainers start feeding them BS they will know better.  I have been to clubs with idiot helpers and club trainers that know two drives .. prey and defense .. a bunch of BS and a huge waste of time and they are likely as not to do harm to my dog.  I have been to seminars and work days and nobody touches Ellis for depth and understanding.  Watching Michael Ellis can only do you good and your dog good.  The only thing sad that I see is people pretending that club trainers are even half as good as Ellis combined with a stupid devotion to a club sytem that neither breeds nor trains dogs very well.   Nobody can be a good dog manager or trainer until they have automatic recall and reaction to the dog at hand with the tools and approaches that the dog needs.  If I am going to learn and become fluent in techniques for managing and training dogs I don't need to learn from some weekend warrior prey drive/defensive drive little league coach who knows little but expresses that he knows a lot.  Yes I have had helpers and other a'holes tell me that they will tell me how to train my dog but they were totally wrong about my dog and their methods.  All of them knew nothing about my dog except what they saw in less than 13 minutes on a strange field and a bunch of dogs stuffed in crates in the back of cars barking their asses off.  Learning dog training is no different than learning a language .. you must learn the concepts and then make them as your mother tongue and thoughts .. If I am going to learn from anyone it will be a master such as Michael Ellis not some pretender stuffed in a too small pair of scratch pants.   Watching Michael Ellis, Ivan Balabanov, or Gildfried Dildei is a much more cost effective way to learn good training techniques than driving 2 hours and spending 4-5 hours standing around waiting for "my turn" .. I find it odd that people have that much time, money and gas to waste on an inferior product.  Michael Ellis delivers more for my time and money and what I learn is correct and the truth .. an investment worth my time and money and the best methods for my dogs.
