So, each day I've been walking my pack where I always walk them, down into the subdivision here (It's a circle with a road in the middle as well);  Well, yesterday I saw two dogs I had never seen before, ever, they were little yappy dogs, one was a very tiny, blackish grey, maybe 5 lbs; Not so bold; The other was a white Terrier type dog, looked maybe 15-20 lbs, more bold, barking a lot, etc. I thought, ah, whatever, since I'm used to seeing many dogs barking (often in a yard that isn't theirs, or on the street) and it's no big deal typically, I can read most dogs, I know how to make most back down or just stop from a distance, and then we move on. Well, I went out today, not really expecting I'd see them, had no clue where they live either. I was walking past one house and out of nowhere the Terrier type dog comes charging full force, not hesitating for a second, and he latches on to my dog Buck, and would not quit attacking. I corrected my dogs to prevent them from fighting the dog (because of my dogs large size they could easily kill this thing if they wanted to), as much as everything in me wanted to let Buck teach it a lesson, I didn't let him.  Nothing verbal though would make the dog back off, only physical force, and even at that, the dog did not want to stop.

What would you guys have done in that situation? I also had considered relaying a message to animal control, but thought......well....dogs roughly 15 or 20 lbs will be favored as if they aren't a threat, and nothing would be done. I will probably just post a note asking them to not let their dog have free roam like that for its own safety. I know other people who walk, and especially as the months are warming up....other people who walk their dogs on that same road. I'm cool with avoiding that one little part of the road, I just know.......not everyone else who walks will.

I would definitely contact AC and make sure a report was made just in case another incident would happen and the end resutls were different. At least your butt would be covered as it was reported to proper authority.  JMO

Thanks Hutchins, will do.  I will say the only reason my dog didn't end up bloody was because the size of that dog, and because of my dogs thick fur. The dog went for the neck area at first.

Yes that is the area they try to go for first.  Dog's instincts tell them to cut off air supply of the other dog right away.  Nature does have a way of protecting them. Most breeds have a thick amount of fur around the neck for that protection.  Hope this gets taken care of before something serious happens. Good luck.

Buy yourself some pepper spray and a wiffle ball bat.

I would let Animal Control know and having had a similar situation more than once, even in a vet's office (not the vet or her staff's fault), I always document.  I have taken to carrying my cell phone and have it set to video record so I just hit the video record button and it has saved me once when a neighbor's 3 dogs came charging at mine across the rood to engage mine in a fight.

GSDguy,

I had the similar issue, same little dog attacking, dog always followed a group of kids that roamed the neighborhood when i said to get their dog they all claimed it wasn't their dog, so next time i brought a leash when dog latched onto my boys rear end i was able to grab it (it was not pretty, i ended up with a broken finger trying to hold on to my 2 dogs who were not very obedient in that situation), Anyways i was able to put leash on this matted mutt, took it home with me and drove it to Humane society, i know that 1st offense owners had to pay $80 to take the dog out, $125 if dog was not neutered, 2 weeks later dog was back and running loose, i took the dog back to society again and 2nd offense had to cost them at least $200...never seen the dog again after that, he either got a better home or they finally contained the little bugger.

Dog attacking my dog will die, end of!

Totaly agree with Hired Dog and if I had a carry permit I would not be using pepper spray and a wiffleball bat anymore. I look like I'm suited up to go to war when I walk my dog. I've had to put up notices on the bulletin boards in my community warning that the next dog running loose that jumps my dog is getting pepper spray and/or dropped kicked and the second time Bev will be allowed to defend herself. She's a big 85 lbs female who cannot abide rude dogs getting in her face.  I'm pretty sure she will be the last dog standing. I've had injuries to my knee keeping Bev from killing these obnoxious labs, schnoodles, doodles, whatevers. Yes, it's not the dogs' fault they have stupid owners, but I really don't care anymore. First report the probem to animal control and tell them you are now carrying pepper spray and whatever else you will use to defend YOURSELF. AC here will send the owners a letter with a first time warning, then a fine. Frankly I'd never try to catch one of those stupid dogs or even think about taking it to AC. It will be pepper sprayed and worse if necessary. My dog's not getting hurt means a lot more to me than keeping some mutt safe. I've already received a few serious bites breaking up dogs fights between my own dogs , it's not going to happen again if I can  help it.

Hired dog, you have no idea how tempted I was to allow my dog Buck to teach it a lesson (that might have worked wonders for making that little dog scram);  If it had been a dog who could have done damage to Buck or any of my guys, I would not have been treating this as lightly as I had. In order to make the little dog stop biting him, I kicked it, twice.....that didn't work well, the third time he hesitantly walked away still wanting more though, which is crazy to me being how he was maybe 15-20 lbs. Next
time I can carry pepper spray, nun chucks, a sword, a bazooka, oh....Okay I'm kidding on a few of those. But wow, I am amazed at the.....either confidence....or stupidity of a dog that size to charge full force into a pack of large size dogs, and then end up right smack in the middle of them. It's a suicide wish. I understand dogs don't necessarily pay attention to size, but wow. Little dogs often try and think they can control the larger.....My dogs don't go for that...

The owners of the dog were not home yesterday when this happened, but I think someone in their family, maybe an out of state son coming in from college or something was? It wasn't one of the main cars I usually see there. This morning I just finished my walk about half an hour ago, we went for a little over an hour. No one was home there, dog was not outside at all, and despite what dogs we saw, or what people, my dogs did phenomenal, definitely proud of them.
