Wow, that has got to be a hit in the stomach. :( You donate a dog, and you have to feel the Police Department probably paid a high price to whomever sold it to them. I can only imagine how mad/upset betrayed you must feel. Thanks for the warning, it sure makes it hard to try and do a good deed when so many don't care.

I'm so sorry, Donald. I really feel for you.
People ask me why I don't donate dogs, and this is why. There are more bogus, disreputable, opportunistic "K-9" and "service dog" project organizations out there than there are reputable, from my experience. I know if I post a young adult for sale, I get a slew of inquiries from people whose credentials don't check out. Scares me. Would rather "waste potential" and put a dog in a family home (if the dog can go in a family home) than send them somewhere I will lose track of them and they'll be shuffled around and flipped like a leased car.
ANYONE looking to donate a dog needs to be VERY VERY CAREFUL (and Donald, I'm not saying you weren't; I'm just underscoring the need to check really deeply) where the dog is actually going. Make sure if you donate a dog, that you can get it back if it doesn't pan out for its intended purpose, if that's what you wish. Otherwise, I imagine they're within their rights to sell a dog not working out for their program without notifying you.

Who knows? I distrust lots of "non-profits." Maybe they "sold" the dog; maybe they "placed" the dog....I'm sure there's lingo to circumvent lots of assumed "rules."

"Non profit" doesn´t say you aren´t allowed to make money, you only need to use this money for the organization, that´s totally legal.
Even a non profit organization needs money...
That said I´d be pissed off like you are right now.
