Raisens and grapes are poisonous......brocoli is toxic to a puppy also......as is choco , and lots of things, even garlic can affect a puppy.....adult dog ok.....I use to give my cocker grapes and raisins when I ate them until I read the site, not this one, another sent to me by a customer who had been a breeder years ago and she did a lot of internet reading and I didnt havae a comp at that time. I was shocked and started hunting for the toxic llists for dogs and its a long one.....lots of house plants on that list , also.....

by olskoolgsds on 23 January 2007 - 23:01

Yes, yellowrose, Lots and lots of plants that go on the list. Our vet provided a list for us a while back that had an alarming number of outside plants as well. What ever happened to the days when you could just let them be puppies?

by ProudShepherdPoppa on 24 January 2007 - 00:01

Probably the same thing as happened to the days when kids could just be kids

Onyx would do anything for a pund of chocolate. He once climbed up on my desk, stood on his hind legs to reach a shelf only a foot from the ceiling, knocked everything off the shelf, to steal a pound box of See's Nuts and Chews I had placed out of his reach (I thought...) Valentine candy left in his reach was history. He never stole anything else. No ill effects ever. SS

Wow, thats interesting I never knew that grapes could kill a dog. I have tried to give my dogs grapes before(they beg for anything I am eating) but they always refused... Lucky Me ;)

by blueskyekennels on 24 January 2007 - 01:01

We must remember, in amounts...one grape, one raision won't kill, but in large amounts, yes. I once heared that it takes 1 lb of Chocolate for every 5 lbs of dog...Not sure if thats true or not, but if you give your GSD a hershey's kiss once in a while, obviously, they haven't died yet...not sure if its still true or not, but amounts matter as much as the substance its self. Okay, my $.02

What a coincident! Todays Deutsche Welle, the English daily news from Germany http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,,266,00.html show on the right hand side of the page about midway down a mauve colored square link "Korinthenkacker", a new quirky interesting word! Click on it and it tells you all about this word. Nothing to do with dogs! Just a fun word to use! No, I did not know about raisins and grapes, and onions. My dogs never had a problem when I threw the onion skins into the soup or fed them garlic. But then, I am kind of ignorant in that way.

Garlic and such wont hurt the adult dogs , its puppies...very toxic....chocolate , a grape or two , or one or two , u dont have to panic,,,,,its the feeding of a quantity, and if ur dog is in a certain time in its early stage , it can effect the intestine, liver, gall bladder for several days and medicine and chemicals needed to staighten out....some dogs can eat iron skillets and never effect them.l......I had a cocker got in my purse everytime she could and chocolate and rolaids by the bottle fulls , several times and she never had diahrea or any effects.....she was a 15 years old miracle girl....they dont make like that any more.....My shepherds get in the garbage sack sometimes and I have diah all the way to New York and back......I can hide the sacks, or go to the phone and leave one bag unattended and someone gets it...I hide the Russell Stover because Id kill them if they ate My Chocolate......(Literally only) Harsh punishment for that......
