Okay, this question may sound silly, but just want to put it out there for consideration. My husband and I have a Belgian Mal and a Hound mix. I've been worrying about what would happen to my pups if something happened to us. Neither one of us have relatives who would take them in the event of an accident.  Are there programs out there that you can contact in case an emergency happened to their owners? I worry that my pups would end up in a kill shelter, separated from each other.  We preplan for our own life insurance, etc. But what do you guys do about your dogs? I have no one I know that I could will them to. Would like comments on what you guys think. Thank you.

Since I only have my work dog to worry about, I have made arrangements with a close friend who has been into dogs as well for a very long time to take mine in case of my death. If he is not available or does not want him at that time, for whatever reason, my dog is to be put down as I will not allow him to be put in a pound. Not that many people would want to deal with him anyway...

I have plans in place for who will take care of what dog and they have been discussed and agreed upon with the people I chose. I treat is much like who will have custody of my younger son if anything happened to us.

Both of our GSD's will go back to their breeders...our senior (12 YO) mix......assuming she is still will us.....and our cats will go to family.
In the event their breeders are not able to take them.....I have working dog friends that will place them for us in appropriate working homes.

Thank you so much to everyone who replied. My breeder isn't someone I would send my Mal back to and my hound is a rescue. I don't have any "dog friends" I could leave my dogs to. My Mal is hard to handle anyway at times.
Hired Dog: I too believe it would be better to have my dogs put down then end up with cruel owners or in very bad situations.

PMWatch, yes, there are programs where you can make arrangements in advance, though they generally do require some sort of monetary commitment in exchange. I have no offspring, and at present no one in my family would be suitable to either charge with rehoming the dogs, or taking them in themselves, so I've got arrangements made for a portion of my estate to go with the dogs to cover their care at a local no-kill shelter, with provisions for the financial support to continue if the dogs are placed as fosters or adopted outright.

I have a friend that has part of her estate go to a rescue that she has checked out to take her dogs in and find suitable homes.  She has a friend that will oversea the money going to the rescue, etc.

I have a training friend that will take my two females and need to update my will to include Finn. I have money that goes with each dog to cover their medical, food etc.

I think it is a great questions and something that i am very concerned about because I couldn't stand the thought of my dogs ending up in a shelter.

If someone is in a situation where they truly do not have someone they trust to take their dogs in the event of death there are places like Peace of Mind Rescue in CA that can assist in the placement of dogs:  http://www.peaceofminddogrescue.org/

For me, I have a trust that was drafted that outlines who gets which dogs as well as an executor who will oversee the placement of my dogs and that my estate pays the individuals enough to care for the life of the dogs.  The executor is a dog friend of mine who I trust to make placement choices for the dogs should the individual who is listed for one of my dogs be unable to take the dog.

Some AKC breed clubs offer their members the opportunity for breed rescues to take and place their dogs in the event of their death. Most I  know who do that also make provisions for a donation to those rescues payable if and when they take the dogs.
