In order to register my dog through USA, they require a tattoo. Does anyone know if the committee will accept a microchip yet instead of a tattoo? My dog is 3 years old and was not tattooed when I bought her.
The tattoo is only required for conformation shows. If you do not have one, you can have one placed on an inner flank. Have the dog mildly sedated or do it when x-raying hips etc. Most people do not do tattoos on ears of older dogs because it can injure the ear.
If all you wish to do is compete in the sport of Schutzhund, yes, a microchip will be fine. However, anytime you enter an event, make certain the club has a reader or be sure to borrow one from your vet.
In time I believe the tattoo system will go into history, where it belongs. It is an archaic practice and getting harder and harder to get tattoos done if one does not have their own equipment.
Good luck.
Yes Hodie all of that is true...but until the SV also agrees with you nothing will change...Other organizations have already moved to use the micro-chips instead of the tattoo...I am old fashioned and not so ethusiastic about the micro-chips...I don't think that the tattoo is the answer either but so far no other forms of identification have come up...I don't micro-chip my dogs...I think that the chips can float around in the body...and can possibly cause damage...Just my fear...

I had my female tattooed in her ear when she was under for a spay. I had my males' tat redone (was extremely faded) when I had him under for a hip xray.

Bob,
I will not say that a particular chip, especially when they first came out, could not migrate a little, but where they did so and caused problems is unknown to me. I microchip all the dogs here and have done so with hundreds without ever having an issue. The people who are against them say that someone can remove one. I suppose one could do that if they were so inclined, but frankly, the overwhelming majority of tattoos I have seen are worthless and poorly done and fade quickly, even those done on pups. The SV is also going to microchips but as of yet, has not made mention of retiring the tattoo system.
Dog nappers are known to cut off the ears to get rid of tattoos. Most AKC people do not tattoo in the ears anymore, instead they use the inner thigh and/or chips. I was sort of suprised when I learned that SV breeders still tattoo ears.
The microchip does not migrate as adhesions form around the chip --
When first placed - I can see that they have some room to move slightly but after a little time like I said above -- I don't think that is an issue.
My choice is the chip -- that is just me.
Her in PA we have a lifetime license option where the dog must be tattooed with a unique ID number. Otherwise I would have had Blitz chipped too. Lately I've been thinking I should have him chipped anyway and may still do that.
My advice: Do NOT tattoo on the inner flank, the belly, or anywhere else but the right ear unless you REALLY want to lay your dog down on its back to let someone read its tattoo.
Hello MUD???
Dominant stranger posture a good idea???
Not in my book.
BTW: Our club had a Hauptner tattoo kit. I will tattoo puppies & adults dogs (sedation req. after 12 weeks) for non-members for a small donation to the club kitty.
