Sunsilver

The article doesn't state what the motivation was, but on New Year's Eve, some idiot (likely an Animal Rights activist, that believes all creatues should be 'free') cut a hole in the fence of the Haliburton wolf sanctuary, allowing several wolves to escape.

Now, two of them have been shot to death.

Nice move, bozo!

Why are people shooting at them with life rounds when they could be shooting them with tranquilizer darts? Whatever happen to that idea?

The story goes like this:

On New Year's Eve, someone, presumably Animal Rights activists, cut through two fences and allowed 4 wolves to escape. Fortunately, the escape was discovered quickly enough that not all of them got loose.

The escape was on all the local news media, in the hope that people would report seeing the wolves so they could be recaptured. Once word got out that the wolves were just hanging around the sanctuary, not wanting to be separated from the pack members who were still inside the fence, someone who hated wolves came and shot two of them. Tthe male wolf was dragged away (blood and drag marks were easy to see on the snow, so it's possible the hunter wanted its pelt as a 'trophy'.) The female was found in the ditch 9 days later, having survived two bullet wounds. Depsite expert care, she died.

Sanctuary employees did manage to dart one of the wolves with a tranquilizer, but the dose wasn't strong enough, and when they approached her, she suddenly woke up and ran off into the bush.

So, in case you still haven't grasped the point of my post: wolves need a sanctuary because there are people out there who believe the only good wolf is a DEAD wolf! I can understand farmers needing to protect their livestock from them, but most of Haliburton is acres and acres of rocks, trees and lakes!

Oh, wait. Of course, you have to SAVE THE DEER from the wolves, so the hunters can shoot them instead..... Roll eyes

Of course, Sunsilver !  (Never mind that deer left to themselves often
need culling, else they reproduce so well they'll starve themselves to
death once numbers exceed available food).   Some ppl will just never
get the importance of bio diversity and the interdependence of species;
all they can see is $£$ and the disembodied pelt or antlers in their
living room.  So wolves will never be truly free and natural again.
Then you put some in a supposedly safe place - and they still don't get
left alone !   The thought of the long & agonising way that she-wolf suffered
makes me weep.

Rant over.  Thanks for posting this story;  even though I can't bear to hear
about it, I feel we need to have this sort of thing kept in the public eye.
