The dogs all had reverse masks which made them look like huskies/husky mixes, but they were not.
If you read Chuck's books, he does mention where some of the females he bred to came from (part of the country, but NOT kennel names.) One bitch was from California, and a member of the PDB once said they worked for a lady in Ontario whose bitches were bred to Chuck's males. This does not surprise me as many of the episodes were shot here in Ontario.
During the latter part of his life, Chuck was friends with Tina Barber, who had incorporated the Hobo dogs into her lines, which became the Shiloh Shepherd. Chuck told her the original dogs had come from a breeder on the west coast of Canada, but had her swear to never reveal the kennel name. Tina tried to breed a dog for him with a reverse mask, but was unsucessful, though reverse masks do pop up from time to time in the Shilohs.
Come on, is there anything in this dog that doesn't say pure GSD?
Chuck named the first Hobo dog London, as that was where he was stationed during WWII (London, England, of course.)

The reverse masks were more popular during the 30s and 40s. Someone once posted a link to a photo of Hitler with a GSD that was a dead ringer for one of the Hobo dogs! Unfortunately, I can no longer find that link.

Eddy you are hell on wanting to tell how people can do things. It's not a shame he kept it a secret--probably the best thing or you would see someone trying to cash in on that. Aside from which just because a dog is correct and a good worker, you have to have the bloodlines that compliment his or you are just spinning your wheels.

I suggest you do the same before taking hearsay for fact!
The dog in the photo is Chuck's very first GSD. He was the father of the next generation, the ones who did the first TV show. He was the one who came from a kennel in B.C., Canada, a very old, very respected kennel. Long gone now, unfortunately.
I've seen pics of the later dogs. They were starting to get that stretched look, with long upper thighs as the American GSD became more and more extreme. Chuck was also having problems with weak temperaments, as the American lines went down the crapper.
I'd take the time to scan some of the photos I have, but you probably still wouldn't believe me...
Ch 10 of London, the Dog Who Made The Team
Once, on a hunting trip up in the Dakotas, Chuck, accepting the fate he was powerless to halt, left London for a short visit with a well-bred German shepherd who was chosen to mother London's pups....
Nine months later, Chuck brought one of the pups, Thorne, home to begin training.
A year after Thorne, Toro, son of London, by Kola of Santa Monica canyon, joined the household...
A year later, a fourth bed had to be made in the house. Chuck had not intended to take on a fourth dog; his hand was force when one of LOndon's latest offspring grew up to be his double.
Here are four of the dogs posing for a publicity shot:. I believe London had passed away by this time. The dogs all had roles in the show. Each one had slightly different skills, and Chuck would pick the one that fitted the requirement for a particualr scene the best.
