Hello Everyone,

Per Dr.s orders, Cisco is to be confined for the next 8 weeks and when he is not into confinement he has to be on a leash.

I have him in the largest crate made right now, but think he would be more comfortable in a larger area during the daytime.

I looking at the 4' tall exercise pen as an alternative form of confinement for the daytime.

Have you purchased one of these?

Where is the best place to get one?

Is there a preferred brand?

I need to order one in the next day or so and would appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks a bunch,
Cheri

I bought mine from dog.com. I think they are all Mid-west brand. If I remember correctly dog.com had the best prices when I was looking so I went with them. I do wish I had bought the black coated ones but mine have been used for years and are still in great condition.

Thanks GSD. I saw the powder coated version. I like that as well.

I recently purchased online from PETSMART a beautiful gold exercise pen with door, it is very nice!  here is a link to the website page:

I got mine from Amazon.com as they had the best price at the time.  I have the midwest ones that have a door and are heavier gauge wire.  The gauge of the wire is important as the thinner wire ex-pens can be flimsy.  I would particularly watch this on the the black epoxy coated ones as my experience has shown me that the coated ones tend to be a thinner gauge of wire that does not hold up as well as other ex-pens seem to do.

I have two 4' ones and the latest one I got for $60 off Craigslist.  It was barely used (couple got it for a puppy but didn't use it).

Thanks guys :)

I wondered about the wire gage on the powder coated version.

His normal crate is made by General Cage and is very well made and heavy duty. Their 4' exercise pens are $140.

I will check out the Midwest brand.

I checked Craigslist first......nothing :(

Another thing to note is that they are not powder coated (at least not the midwest ones) but epoxy coated (basically plastic coated) and is easier for bored teeth to destroy than powder coating ;-)

I agree about the coating and gauge.  My non-coated one is definitely a heavier gauge, maybe 9?  The one I got on CL is black coated and more flimsy, probably more like 12 gauge.  For me it doesn't matter since I use the black one to make a pen for my adult dog when I have company over that hates dogs and he doesn't challenge it, I just figure it's more comfortable than being tossed in a crate.

This is bringing back memories of Dante's padded cell....
I feel for what you are going thru, Cheri...

Dante was much more comfortable in the xpen jail... In my circumstance, I even padded the sides and wall with foam..just in case he moved around too much.

I have always found my x-pens at large AKC dog shows..  Look and see if there are any "cluster" shows down that way..  the vendors sell them at great prices, and you can pick and choose the style and brand.
There is no shipping, so that is the best  part.

I have a general cage gold pen, with a door, and a really old midwest with a door and a drop pin.

Craig list has people selling them occasionally...  usually they are the pet mart ones.  Also ask around if any dog people might loan you one?
I don't think it needs to be that heavy duty.. but probably tall enough so that he isnt tempted to hop up on it.. or over it.

I have a 42 and a 48 inch tall.
