I was wondering, when should you change from a puppy soft sleeve to an intermediate sleeve or bar sleeve. Pup is 10 months old. Has a good full grip when he bites.

You could stay with the soft sleeve until the hardness of the bite makes becomes uncomfortable on the arm.

Sammy...

Your helper would know, as Gunther correctly puts it...

The grip may be full but how hard is that grip...

Well I am the helper, My wife does the handling, for right now. I know that eventually I have to be the handler, And let me tell you Colt hits hard and really clamps down. I am not a full fledge trainer by any means, but I feel his bite enough to know that it is beginning to feel like the sleeve is getting thinner. When I do change sleeves what sleeve shall I start useing?  I appreciate your help Thank you

When he or she bites the sleeve and it fills like electricity shooting up your arm from being crushed.

Why not try a normal sleeve?  My last dog went straight to an intermediate or trial sleeve (doesn't matter to him, never did).  Granted we didn't work him much before 15 months because he was rather immature, not really bringing true aggression just a lot of prey and frustration, but we tested him out a few times before he was a year old and it was always on the same sleeve the adults used.  If he likes to bite and he bites full and hard I don't think it really matters.

Dog Training is all TRIAL & ERROR...So you can try another sleeve and see how he does on it...There are many sleeves...1/2 sleeves and the such to choose from...It all depends on what your dog will work on and what you have available...

If you switch to another sleeve...I'd work your young guy on the sleeve he's used to and then while he's in the mood...just switch sleeves and let him bite the new one and see how it goes...Always have available the old sleeve in case you need to go back and re-enforce his work....

These are the things that are very hard to explain on paper...This is why having an experienced person there to help is so important...But if you're always ready to go back to what the dog knows...then you won't do any or much damage...Of course it all depends on the dog and how he was brought up...
