Hello,
I bought a German Shepherd female a few months ago when she was 7 months old and she was Black and dark Red, and now she is 19 mo. and her color has change from dark red to a light red or dark tan, is this normal or has something to do with the food or something else?
She is pure German Shepherd. Akc Reg.

Huntered, the colours on GSD puppies is always subject to change, you never know
exactly what you are getting until after the full 'adult' coat has come through.
Not at all surprising that she was a deeper red at 7 mths than she is now. She will
have been even deeper red as a baby puppy. BTW it tends to change again when
they start to get old, she may pale out a lot by the time she is 7 yrs or so.

They absolutely will change. In females, I've noted that the intensity of their tan/red color can change during/after cycles, also seen color intensity change through the seasons.
I kept two pups from my first litter, the male had a lovely rich golden tan color and the female was a typical WGS red when they were puppies. Now they are adults, the male is a very rich intense red color and the female is a reddish tan color. So the male darkened and the female lightened.

Thank you guys for you replies, I just hope the our new addition doesn not change that much, I really like his dark red color but for wnat I can hear from you there is not guarantee that the red is going to stay.

conformaiton line puppies are born almost all black, as they mature the black withdraws and red/orange/tan replace until they get the typical pattern.
when shedding, their color fades a bit until the new coat comes in.

it is quite possible the mentioned hund was fed carrots by the seller or the product.. olewo.. was being used..its a carrot concentrate which is used by lots of high line breeders in europe..it can really change the pigment to a redder color.. try it ..puree raw carrots or steamed carrots or they will not be digested. i used on an import i once had and the previous owner could not reconize him..

I like Olewo; have used / seen it used quite a lot; can't say I ever noticed it
creating all that much difference in colour, maybe a little.
