We do both, we've buried the first few in our backyard pet cemetary, we live on 18 acres so have plenty of room. Then with our bigger dogs we've lost we had them cremated, and then buried with the others so all my beloved pets are together with markers spotting each ones grave.  We planted roses in the garden so they will always have a pretty spot to rest.

i have always buried mine along with a bowl and their favorite toy, the act of burying to me gives you something to do, focuses you mentally in a positive and thoughtful direction. To me it is the last act of taking care of my dogs. When my first GSD died I took her home and buried her, about a month later a story came out in the Washington Post of a company that was taking the corpses of animals from Washington DC area veterinary clinics and just tossing the corpses out in a remote area in Pennsylvania to rot in the open. I would have been devastated if that had happened to my dog. With the stories that have come out in recent years of human crematories not burning the corpses but giving the relatives ashes from the BBQ grill, how can you be sure that is your dog that you get back?
