I've only ever done CKC style tracking (same rules as AKC, pretty much) and I know in schutzhund, the dog is penalized every time it raises its head, and is supposed to track from footstep to footstep. How about if it tracks to the left or right of the track, due to a crosswind blowing? Will it be penalized for this, even if it keeps its head down?

Good question. I say yes. Not 100% sure though.

Hi Sunsilver,

Check out the rule book:

http://www.gsscc.ca/media/78968/newrulesjuly2012.pdf

Depends on the judge, too.

Yes you would be penalized....may pass but the score would be low.

Unfortunately, yes the dog has to stay on track. Schz tracking is precise and time is not an issue, not like operational tracking/trailing

Super Para has it right.

Schutzhund tracking is about precision and about the over all picture of a dog with a deep nose and intense concentration and focus on the track.

Going simply from your description your female was a 'foot off' the track due to the cross wind because she was not presenting a 'deep nose', she tracking higher scent that naturally drifted on the breeze.

You most likely would not fail tracking and depending upon where you were trialing (club, Regional, National, World) it would most likely vary judge to judge how many points you lost. Obviously a club level dog is 'most likely' not going to be penalized as strictly as a dog showing at a Regional or higher competition.

There is a tracking title in SchH (now IPO) called the StP "(Stöberprüfung "Random Search Test") - Random article search test in a prescribed area. Three levels of increasing difficulty (STP1, STP2, STP3).

I have not had the opportunity to see this test trialed for or judged so I'm not sure what sort of over all picture the judge is looking for or the exact rules for this title. I've always thought it sounds rather fun and my bitch loves to track and I could do this with her. Maybe someone else on the board has direct experience with the StP?

The dog will be penalized for being off of the track and there is a time limit to complete each level of tracking. The dog can't take all day to work out the track. The time limits are indicated in the rule book.

Of COURSE I knew that!  Roll eyes  What would make you think otherwise?

I've been doing CKC tracking for many years. And TT was kind enough to post a link to the rules for the GSSC rulebook, so now I  know the IPO 1 track time limit is 15 minutes.

Just to clarify:
The "Stöberhundeprüfung" is not part of IPO!! It's a trial offered by FCI and is a German gun dog test.
The only tracking tests with IPO or TR1, 2, 3 and FH1, 2 and of course the tracking part A of IPO 1, 2, 3.

The STP is offered by both DVG and UScA not only FCI. There was talk when it was first offered that it might someday be an option to replace the tracking portion of the
Schutzhund/IPO test, because of the difficulty of finding trialing tracking ground.
