Friends, which is the best dog food for you between Royal Canin, Happydog, Eagle Pack & Pro Plan? Your inputs are most welcome. Thanks!

For me the best is the "barf" diet! yu may search the web for more details. I've fed my shepherds with these and i never had any skin problems, allergies and my dogs are healthier than before. I aslo have no problems with milk during latation!

I'll choose bosch, a high premium pet food.

Wok, the dog diet is a holy grail. The best answer atleast I can give you is that there is NO universal diet even specific to the breed leave alone the entire canine race. You have to try and experiment. With my little experience I can tell you that raw diet is the safest and the best but should be human grade meat only. Organs are very dangerous. Kibbles are ok to give a variety to the dog but I gave my dog Royal Canine Maxi and he gained a lot of weight. Unless the kibble is breed specific like Royal Canine GSD 24 you cannot say the company has done any research into the diet specific to the breed. One last thing the best way to know that the diet is suiting your dog is by watching his stools. If they are less frequent, hard and log shaped then the diet is being absorbed well and your dog is fine. Ofcourse other health check ups are necessary from time to time.

Hello Wok, You asked a very good question. This question confuses almost each and every new dog owner. I have also gone through the same dilemma. Finally I settled with Purina as it is reasonably priced and good results. I have gone through a BARF diet book also. But practicaly it is impossible to follow that. Unless one is full time breeder. Otherwise it is difficult to follow the procedures mentioned in the book. Also getting a guaranteed source of clean and helathy meat is atleast difficult here in India where there is fixed standards. Then you have to add different ingredients like kelp powder, raw oil, etc. Which is not easily available here. Anyway I find it impractical for amateur person to follow. I would like you to follow these simple observations to decide if the food is suitable or not 1) Dog is healthy i.e. good coat condition,no stomach upsets, no worms, playful, finishes food fast. 2)If dog is a female then she should produce healthy puppies or if you are not breeding at least she should come in season at regular intervals. 3)After all the food should not be too expensive. because in India foods like Royal Canin,Eukanuba,Pro Pack are extremely expensive.

Out of the ones you listed I had only tried Royal Canin. Thre food I reccommend is Genesis - its a Canadian dog food, and all my GSD's thrive on it. With regards to dogs putting on too much weight with a particular food - it means you need to feed less, or up their excersise! With this food (Genesis) you actually feed less than you would with other foods. Sharon

Hi Wok, Here's what I now feed: Diamond NATURALS FEATURING NO CORN, OR BY-PRODUCTS, in the month I've been feeding it, my dogs coats have REALLY looked a lot better, and my dogs have more energy and my dog that was slightly over weight has lost a few pounds...I recommend Diamond Krista blueskyekennels@msn.com

I BARF fed and most of my dogs are healthy and great. To be fair, I won't say all my dogs are free from allegies, would they be better off with commercial dog food? I am not sure, but I can only imagine that commercial dog food are processed from similar or lower grade ingredients and perhaps less fresh than the BARF that I am giving my dogs. IMO, the same logic that Human is better off with fresh food can be applied to dog too, as long as one recognise that dog is carnivores and their diet should follow the "prey model" i.e. imagine what dogs consumed before they were domesticated, whole rabbits, wild poultry, meat, bones, organs and partly digested contents of large herbivores. One cannot but recognised the convenience of commercial dog food, but I rather invest a little (only a little) effort in the preparation of the fresh food for my dogs.

Alphaisme Why are organs dangerous? I do feed organs, beef lung, liver, heart, and I believed commercial dog food companies use them too. Grateful if you could explain.
