I've known a couple of military families who've rehomed their pets instead of moving with them.  Moving with pets is no easy task - particularly if air travel is required, and then there's making sure you can find housing (rentals/government/whatever) that will allow you to have your pets - but military families are doing it all the time, ours included.

When someone asked how much it was going to cost us to get our pets to our next duty station (via air), her eyes got wide and she said she couldn't believe we were willing to spend that much just on the air travel - I didn't even go into the boarding cost.  I told her that of course I wasn't looking forward to it, but it wasn't so much about being *willing* to spend that much, but *having* to once we decided to get the pets we have.  It's just part of the package when you decide to take in pets - for us anyway.

I would hate to think that someone wouldn't sell/give us a pet simply because we're a military family.  I understand the reasoning, but I agree with others that it's not just military families rehoming pets.  I guess it's just a gamble.
