What does this actually mean?

The puppies have experienced children in the family who are shown to respect and handle a puppy appropriately?

Or, the children treat the puppy as their new novelty toy?

So, now we have either a puppy who is accustomed to little young 'people'.

Or, a twitchy apprehensive puppy who is not sure if he/she is going to be sat on, held in a neck-lock, or patted like a pan-cake!

Good question. I have had people ask me this whenever I have a litter on the ground - "are your puppies used to children?". I don't have kids, so the answer is no. I've never understood why that is an issue. An 8 week old puppy will easily become accustomed to a well behaved child. All puppies will scratch and bite unless taught not to. I suppose this term "used to children" is a good thing, though, for the buyers who think this is a must have requirement. They probably don't think to ask how the children interacted with the puppies, though. I'd say it's better to have NO interaction with children vs interaction with children who have no respect for dogs.

Yes, some folk think it is sufficient 'done and dusted' if the puppy was raised with children, he/she will KNOW not to nip or jump, and the new family have no need to consider guidance and training with their children!

Small breed puppies have bigger issues with children. I had a small mix that has been mishandled and hurt by young kids while a puppy and it made her fear kids forever. GSD pups are pretty rugged and they play rough with their mother and siblings.

My pups were being held and touched by small kids (2-5 years old) almost from the moment they were born. But always under supervision and never really hurt any puppy. Kids also feed puppies with cooked chicken and play with them. For my pups, kids are fun.  Even if somebody had their foot stepped on accidentally, they'll just yelp and keep on playing.

And this is what I think is the difference. But I agree with Ramage, 8 week old pup that hasn't been exposed to kids yet didn't miss out much and there is no issue. They can develop issues with kids later on anyway - it all depends on the kids they encounter.

Yeah, it always amazes me that people seem to expect an eight-week-old to be thoroughly practised and bomb-proofed
with every and any child.  Bit like they expect dogs to come ready-trained to Sit, Down & Stay, i suppose.
