When I was leash walking my 6 month old puppy today, she saw an "intruder" about 400 ft. away and alerted me by barking. She then proceded to go toward the "intruder" rather quickly with me on the leash with her. We got soon close to the "intruder" ,maybe 2 feet away and the puppy acted shy for a few minutes and was then ok. What does this behavior mean ? The intruder was a family member come to visit that she had not met or I would not have gone up to her. I wanted to see how the puppy would act. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Is this in the day or at night time ? Puppies are very curious at that age. They like to explore things rather fast and sometimes too fast and they change there minds. But it can all depend on what the the family member was wearing and how the family member acted towards the puppy.

Also the puppies hormones are all mixed up at 6 months plus. They can go through a freaky stage where small things that dont usually bother them,Will bother them..

Was the person a man or woman and how large of a person were they? Plus if this person was a large male has the pup been around large males? Another question is how did this person act? For example did they loom tall over the pup? You pup may be somewhat defensive which is fine and really not to worry about. The more you train and socialize the more confidence the pup will have. Like Lewis mentioned pups go thru fear stages and it may be in one now. Does this pup act the same way towards other strangers? Some people for whatever reason make some dogs nervous of them. Lots of questions but hopefully helpful to you.

It was bright daytime and a 5 ft2 elderly woman. She did not act spooky, The person was rather calm but new to puppy and not a large intimidating male. The lady was up on steps which might account for "looming". She does seem to be acting this way with other strangers a bit.

I would get her out all you can and you might ask people to kneel down and see if that helps. So after a few minutes with the person she warms up to them? Hopefully just going thru a fear stage and she will get out of it soon.

yes, after a few minutes she warmed up and was fine and even cuddled

Get her out alot and bring treats with you for whoever to give her. Make sure her experiences are all as good as possible. Seems bad things stick with all "young kids". She sounds like she will be fine.

I would not worry about it. I see it in alot of puppies, they charge head on at a precieved threat and when they get there they are a little unsure of what to do. As long as every expierience is positive you will have no problems. Your pup is fine, would rather see this then the puppy that sees something unfamiliar and instead of going full force to investigate turns tail running away crying. Mike
