I was competing at a Dock Dogs event tonight and saw someone giving their dog some honey (a 1/2-1 tbs.) shortly before they competed. I asked him why, he said it gives them a burst of energy, he said alot of Dock Doggers do it. I thought it was weird...any thoughts?

I did a search and found this link: http://www.chinabees.com/htm3/cpjs/honey_energy.htm If it works for people it most likely would work for dogs too. Maybe I need some honey!!

Well I tried the honey before a track meet years ago and although I did not eat much it made me sick at my stomach for several hours. Last time I tried Honey.lol

Honey can provide a very quick fuel for the body, but the side effects are usually the production of more lactic acid in the moving muscle tissue and this will cause discomfort later. Now that works for a human, and I presume that a dog would be similar. However, I do not know how much of a blood sugar spike that a dog's body can safely handle. They normally do not eat many very sweet things. I know that cheap dog foods often have a lot of sugar content, and perhaps that makes the dog "frisky" without providing much nutrition. I guess that a small amount would be okay, because it is not on my list of prohibited items for a dog. The only concern that I would have is the elevated blood sugar level and the resulting effect on the liver and the kidneys. Bob-O

I've never used this on dogs but I showed horses and I gave them bee pollen and other bee products and it did work wonders on the horses coats and really seemed to give them lots of go power. Seemed they calmed down a lot quicker after running also. I give my dogs a product called fresh factors and it does have bee pollen in it. www.springtimeinc.com if you want to check it out.

I would think that a dog with normal insulin levels could safely handle 1/2-1 I know many climbers and sprinters who swear by it.

The best use for honey is actually on severe open injuries. It is now used in vet clinics and human emergency rooms to keep infections away. I had a very bad injury on one of my dogs and honey was applied daily, new bandages etc. It is AMAZING how healing it is. Honey (sugar will also work) is applied and takes away all moisture, thus not allowing any infection to start.
