I just added a layer of about 3 inches of gravel stone at the kennel' runs. The gravel size I used vary from 1 to 3 inches. The dogs do not look quite happy running and staying on it as they re not really stable on it. Is is something temporaly until they get used to it? Should I add another layer of a smaller size? Does it really help to keep the feet compact? Would appreciate any of your comments and ideas.

Hi, The complete area around my house is gravel/pebbels. Mine are about 1-3cm and the dogs have never had any problems with this underground. I find it looks good and is easy to clean. Isabelle

I have gravel too, it can be your dogs, i have a friend who has showy dogs who are very dainty and walk on it like there walking on nails. While my 10wk old pup runs and plays no problem along with my other 4 dogs.

The size of your gravel that the dogs walk or run on should be pea gravel, not one to three inches stones. Sugggest you rake the stones up, use it somewhere else around the kennels or house and replace with pea gravel. The dogs will be happier, and it will be easier to clean up. Yes, they will get used to the other stuff, but it is not really the best solution. Isabelle says her gravel is 1 to 3 centimeters.....that is a big difference from stones that are measured 1-3 inches. Good luck.

Hodie is right. That size will never make a good base as it will never pack down. Pea gravel is good. If you want something that will pack into a firm surface, get some washed 5/8 minus. That size will compact and lock up on itself.

I've used 1/2 inch/minus for over 20 years without a problem. It's easy to clean up too.

I agree with Hodie, I use the pea gravel everywhere. The other thing with your 1-3 inch gravel is that it is probably fractured rock versus the smooth pea gravel. We had alot of problems with the dogs on the larger gravel, fractured rock around the kennels in Afghanistan, many of the dogs never got use to it. Use the small pea gravel, easy cleanup and the dogs will have no problems with it. mike
