Just got this little guy from the Atlanta Humane society, and they said they thought he was pure...but I've heard otherwise based on his looks.

I honestly don't mind what he is, and I'm not about to DNA test the poor guy...any feedback would be appreciated!

Looks like a Malinois mix too me. He is cute. Good luck with him.

Cute puppy! Does he have a tail?  And did you just feed him? That's a round belly! Is he cleared from parasites? If unsure, I would get him checked.

Congrats on your new pup...what is his name? I think he'd be closer to a Malinois than a GSD, providing his tail is hiding under the sofa, LOL!

Yep, the shelter had him clear, vet appointment on Monday...he's supposedly 2 1/2 months old

Here's a better picture, definitely has a tail!

I recently saw a pure bred shepherd at agility that is marked exactly like that. Black mask, light fawn body. No saddle, or mask just a little darkening on the tail area and slightly darker ears. That dog is also very tall but i do believe he was an early neuter. You pup may grow up to resemble that "plain" colored shepherd. But with the white toes i'd venture to day there is a little something else in the mix.
Shelters and humane societies usually can't tell a dane from a chiahuhua. So he could be anything and the people that dumped the litter could have been liers. But as long as little blondie there had a good home that all that counts.
Best of luck with your new puppy.

GSD's can have white toes and be purebred GSD's. By most standards it is a fault, but it does not make them less of a GSD.

That's a very common age for sables to lose their markings. Even my very dark ones get nearly monochromatic around that age, so he could just be a GSD with not very good pigment. White toe tips are also common in poorly-pigmented dogs, and very well-bred dogs alike! Some go away as they age. I don't think you're going to be able to tell much until he is older and his coat matures.

Oh he's gorgeous! I remember when Zane was that age. SO warm and cuddly. And he grew into a monster standing at 104cm atw.

Your pup looks just as much a purebred GSD as a Mali, or possible cross between one of those and somethign else. If you're not too bthered then hang on until he's older. His coat will change colour several times before he's fully mature (winter/summer coat etc) anyway.

Enjoy him - puppyhood drives me nuts but it's an amazing time when they're discovering things.
