So, I'm curious, does anyone know if there are any Sibes out there doing Schutzhund? I ask because Little Dude's drives are crazy. I've never seen a Husky with drives like this, and they seem to be coming out more and more still. He'll chase and latch on to the bite tug, not always a full grip, but it's a nice strong grip. I was toying around with him today with the sleeve to see what he'd actually do, and he did bite it as well.  Obviously being a Husky he wouldn't bark in a bark n hold......but I was just curious about this. He'll fetch almost anything too.  We've done a good amount of OB as well, though it's been a couple of months since we've done much.

I'm sure you can. Check this dog out. If this breed can do it, I'm sure a husky can.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTN5kTkdvME

I am sure a Sibe could do SchH. There was a K9 I saw YEARS ago that was a Malamute. It was dual purpose... Evasive species/protection. He was a K9 for a park service.

Jyl,  that's awesome.  Little Dude has one heck of a nose on him too.  He can literally smell even a small piece of food in my car (from the outside, and windows up) and then go in and find it very quickly with his nose.   Little Dude would never be able to do protection work without equipment, he doesn't have that kind of courage, he's just a very, very drivey dog.

macrowe1, my computer is acting up right now, I can't watch the video at the moment.

While i have not seen any huskies doing anything other than basic obedience. I'm sure with a good training program much can be done with them. But your really going to have to exploit their strong points and never give in with their weaknesses.
I have seen Border Terriers, JRT like the one in the video, Aussies, Aussie cattle dog, pit bulls and american bulldogs. I'm sure someone out there has a Schn golden retreiver because it really is a training program. And any dog with reasonable drive that can be channeled can do this.
If nothing else it could be a bunch of fun to try. :D

I had a friend of mine give me one of his dogs for a short while, that turned into a perminate while! LOL Anyway, I do schutzhund with him and is marvelous! His drive was too crazy to be ignored. He is very clear headed for a Siberian and has a wonderful on/off switch! I have seen Labradors and Standard Poodles do it too! Good luck with your Husky, I am sure you will get some looks but any dog can do it if you put in the work! Have fun!!!

Our rescue husky absolutely does awesome bitework (play but has a nice firm grip and no mouthing) and has learned to bark from our two GSD pups so I frustrate hm a bit with a tug and tie back (he's 5) and he will bark for it like crazy. I'm sure it can be done. He has quite the nose on him and has managed to track all of the leftover scent pad treats the pups leave behind lol. He's started to come forward a bit when I walk him and he sees someone shady as well and while I jokingly ask him if he thinks he is going to protect me from snowballs he is pretty serious in watching so maybe some defense in him and not just prey.

Some individuals of every breed can earned a Sch degree. Most can't. There is only one Malamute in breed history with a Sch1.

  1. Having owned and raced Sib's many years back, I'd say that they CAN learn the SchH routine, but that due to the independent nature of most of the breed I have doubts that they would be reliable.  Even Obedience trained huskies tend to look at you and go.... "I just DID that, weren't you watching???"  They get bored with repeditive lessons and decide for themselves whether to do it or not.  That's not to say you will NEVER find one who would do okay, but as a breed it's not where I'd look for a cantidate.  Mal's or Akitas would be breeds I'd look at more than Siberians.  Just like my old Shepherd used to race on a sled team, it's not the breed's forte.
