cphudson

This is my 6 week old puppy out of a recent litter with Ellex von Windecker Hof X Carly Policia-Slovakia & Bali Panta Rei daughter. I've had someone interested in him for a show + work home.

I've been out of the show world for some time now other than breed surveys. I love his confirmation but not sure if his type would do well in a show ring -?

The perspective family wants to do AKC & some SV showing plus schutzhund. The puppy right now has beautiful movement, great temperament & drives.

What would you think of his chances in a AKC / SV show ring? I normally just get request for working, haven't dealt with showing in a long time. But back then we evaluated the puppies at 6 weeks.
Thanks for your input.

No clue about the show thing, but that's a nice looking pup.

Well there are no guarantees in the dog world as you know, however, for AKC conformation shows he COULD do OK as the topline is what the AM show ring needs, a tich longer back and looks to have a wonderful patient personality for 6 weeks, just darling.  Best of luck, nice angles and from what I can see and good layback, how does he move?  Nan

  Hi,
He comes from super working lines.
I would work him and forget showing.

If the owners want to show him, he would probably do best in the UKC show rings.  He may earn an SG in a WDA or UScA show ring.  If they show him in AKC then they best stick to all-breed shows only, sometimes you run into a judge who appreciates working line structure over extreme showline structure in the all-breed rings.

It seems to me that the pup is lacking in lay-back of the shoulder, it's shoulder seems to be too open and upright, it is a bit hard to tell because it's very dark and hard to see any outlines of muscle/bone lay.  The pup could also use better turn of the stifle.
These critiques are based on the German Shepherd typical show structures.  The pup is rather square for showing purposes.  If it was a different breed then it's front and rear angulations would be good.  But the show type GSDs have more angulation.  Otherwise it is a well built pup.  I like it's firm, straight topline (with no dip, sway or roaching apparent)

Thanks everyone, I think I'll refer them to someone that has more SL's because I don't want them to get disappointed in him if he doesn't do well in AKC show ring.
I went to an AKC all breed show over this past winter & my pup doesn't look like the typical German Shepherd dog winning in those events.

If this family just wanted to do showing for fun / junior handling / SV breed survey then focus on work it could work with my pup, but they want to focus on more of the showing aspect mainly with AKC.
I just love his looks but that doesn't make him a show stopper within the AKC show ring. LOL

Once again thank you for your compliments & evaluation.

keep in mind that even german highlines (SL) do not do that well in the AKC ring.  There have been a few recently doing nicely but they are few and far between. If they want to show AKC, best get an akc show type shepherd. Highlines(SL)do well in CKC and International rings though.

Agree. No way for AKC. I have only see a handful of German dogs do well and they were V rated showline dogs.....

Even at 6 weeks the AKC show prospects are very angulated with pasterns pressed against the ground when they move. I belong to a GSDCA club where most of the members have AKC show dogs and I see plenty of show prospect puppies.  I attend AKC all-breed shows a lot as well to support friends (who, ironically, don't own GSDs).

All-breeds shows are not much better than specialty- lots of cross over.  Also, this puppy better be a "10" mover to even have 1/2 a shot in the ring. It's all about movement, movement, movement with these show people along with topline and angulation.

But, "Heck Yeah" for UKC!! I showed my WL bitch to a Championship with UKC as they truly value "working conformation".

Cute puppy looks very correct!!!!

he has the normal angulations, I see better front upper arm and more front chest development in show puppies at this age, his size and bone size look medium. He looks very cute and probably he will mature into a bi-color. Carly Policia produces strong characters and solid nerves as I hear.
