Hi, I am very new to confirmation and competition and I just had a silly question, I am trying to register my Boxer with the AKC, and I am just wondering since I do not have a kennel name, is it appropriate or preferred that I use the parts of the parents names to denote which lines/kennels he came from in his name?  His sire is : Quantum Satis Del Colle Dell'Infinito and his dam is: Layla Ali Von Der Garza.   Now, I am not good at German or (Italian?) at all, so I am not sure even if I am allowed or supposed to use parts of their names, what parts I am supposed to use...  I am brand new at this and just need a little help if anyone is willing.  My dogs name is Chaos, and would somehow like to incorporate that into his name as well....  Thank you!

I am no expert, but you usually incorporate the Dam's name.

So something like "Chaos Von Der Garza" I would think.

Someone correct me if I am wrong :)

You would use the breeder's kennel name it may be in your contract. If Layla Ali Von Der Garza was not breed by your breeder then the Von Der Garza kennel may be offended if you use their kennel name for a dog they did not breed. When a breeder breeds a dog they generally want recognition for the work they did so your dog should get the kennel name of the breeder that bred the dog. Did you purchase the dog from a breeder? Be careful when naming the dog as the A.K.C will let you name whatever you want right or wrong. The reason to use the dam's kennel name is if the breeder kept and bred a bitch they themselves had bred as a puppy, It probably works in half of cases and it goes for males also. Good luck with your pup I have fond memories of Boxers.

Ohh, thank you so much for your help! I did read over the contract and did get the dog from an AKC registered breeder, however she does not have her own (registered) kennel name that I am aware of. I did check with the AKC and neither Del Colle Dell'Infinito nor Von Der Garza are registered as kennels in the US....however Von Der Garza is registered in Mexico, and Del Colle Dell'Infinito is registered in Italy. I guess that is where I am confused, because I want to include the Dell'Infinito into his name because it is a very well known and respected kennel and want to give credit to his bloodline. Should I contact those kennels regarding using their name? And I should mention that the breeder does not own the stud, and the bitch was not one of her own she had bred previously, she acquired her from another breeder... Don't know if that matters, but just thought I would throw that out there. Thank you so much for the advice.

You should get the approval of those kennels before using their names. A well known and respected kennel will want to control which dogs carry that badge of honor. Many breeders even respected ones breed females they bought from other kennels and use studs they don't own. I would respect the wishes of the breeder you got the dog from, she may have a name which is not registered. If she has no ideas to give you why not Infinito von Haymaker?

Just another point, what could be the harm in putting a name on a pedigree no one else but you would see? But if you were planing on showing or breeding you run the risk of offending that well respected kennel and being accused of misrepresenting your dog as something it is not. AKC breeders may be more liberal about this but the Europeans would not agree.

Thanks for all the help, I have emais in to both the parents kennels asking if I have permission to use their name in his. I do plan on showing him, so I absolutely do not want to disrespect anyone, which is exactly why I asked for help, because I am pretty new at this, and just want to do it the right way. Thank you!

Sorry for my ignorance but isn't the breeder responsible for registering the litter in the US ??
