I am curious; how often do you worm your dogs and what do you use? Currently, we use Heartgard Plus every month because we have such a problem with mosquitos in our yard and neighborhood. Even during a warmer winter day the mosquitos come out and pester us. But I am interested in using something more natural (if possible and effective), as the drugs seem so harsh.

I don't routinely deworm dogs unless a fecal exam shows the need to do so.

I deworm every 3 months all of my dogs- Alternating with Panacur and Pyrantel. Living in Florida and traveling with my dogs to Germany and Canada to shows exposes my dogs to parasites and other bacteria. In addition I do fecal checks on all of my dogs thruout the year. This keeps my dogs clean and healthy.

I use 1% injectable Ivermectin once a month, which is the exact same ingredient that is in Heartguard but way less in cost. As a registered nurse I'm always looking at ingredients of anything that I use on/in my dogs. It takes care of just about all worms/heartworms too. You can buy it online, or any livestock supply store, I get mine from Tractor Supply Co.

If a dog takes ivermectin monthly as a h-worm preventative it will probably not need anything else for internal parasites other than tapeworms. For me it's bad enough that I have to give a h-worm preventative monthly, I don't want to give my dog anything else toxic unless needed.

Parasites are in the environment and mine run free so I usually worm after we've had a hard freeze, once a year for adults.
I worm a bitch right after she has bred.
I prefer Panacure for round worms, and I use Interceptor plus for heart worms all year.
If you do get tapes you'll see them in the stool, tests at my vet are more expensive than treatment and I check stools regularly anyway.
Young dogs are checked after being wormed at six weeks, at six month intervals until two years.

I also use injectible ivermectin for monthly heartworm and don't do additional de-worming unless needed, however I don't breed or have puppies around, just my 1-5 year old dogs.

Thank you to everyone who has responded! Does anyone know of a natural preventive for heartworm that is safe, or is Heartgard Plus my safest bet for "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"? I have an Australian Shepherd that I am concerned about having MDR1; my vet has assured that HP is safe for her, but I am more into alternative medicine for humans so I was just wondering if there is anything natural that would do the same job as Heartgard Plus. In addition to the MDR1 concern, all the dogs get diarrhea the day of worming or the day after; I am concerned about their kidneys/liver being trashed from the harsh drugs.

I use drontal tablets every 6 months mainly because I feed raw just as a precautionary measure . I get my meat from the supermarket fit for human consumption for my dogs coz I live in the suburbs. I read that if dogs are fed raw from hunted animals like wild rabbits, deer etc they should be de-wormed more regularly.
