Kerschberger

From the source who told me about the two 'versions' of DM I received this answer to help her clarify Dr. Coates email.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it is clear that the DM test that OFFA is doing is based on the research of U of Mo. group who showed that there is a common gene shared canines and humans which has been identified with ALS in humans and DM in canines.

Dr. Clemmons research has not identified this gene - his research is questionable and he has published results showing a gene more closely related to the physiology of MS ( a different neurolmuscular disease in humans and perhaps in canines).  He has not done enough publishing of his work to make his discoveries that credible.

I have faith in the research and results of the Un of Mo.-- their results were published in the  Proceedings of the National Academy of Science a most prestigious and respected publication.  This is real science.

Dr. Clemmons still has to prove his theory and genetics.  I do not know where his research is going.  I sent blood samples to him nearly two yeas ago and he has never sent me results.  I am not sure he has a research lab anymore?????  However, G. A.  had him test her animals when he did have an active lab and all of her dogs that were tested were considered negative for what he  called the "DM" gene......

The following year and then again this year several of her dogs demonstrated symptomatic and progressive DM - two ere OFA tested and they were AA...  So that shows the two tests are testing for different genes.     Right now DM seems to be more common..
  -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other words I feel we are on the right track to first test for OFA DM  but should a dog be symptomatic coming back negative from that OFA test, well then test thru the blood test of Dr. Clemmons.
