What time of the day do most bitches deliver?
Is it true it is usually in the middle of the night?
Do all drop temp before delivery?

by jmopaso on 08 May 2011 - 16:05

They can deliver any time of the day or night. It is quite nice of them when they go during the day though.
Temps usually drop but not always.

times normally depends on when you mate them, but can arrive anytime normally at night, temperature always dropps BUT sometimes you miss the drop and then the temperature goes back up once in labour so unless you are taking the temperature many times aday then you may miss it, i normally take it twice a day night and morning same time each day, there are many many others signs of whelping, one i have noticed is they get a smell about them when within 12 hours

Anytime of day.....temp drops within a few hrs before, problem is when they about to deliver starts to go up,so you need to keep checking every hour or so...just look at her,and see if there are any contractions which will be far apart and then closer together when she's about to deliver...get some help, please , looks like you need it.....Good luck

3 litters, 3 different bitches, 3 different years, 3 different start times.........

6:30 pm

7:30 am

12:45 am

From my limited experience, the can start to whelp at any time.

The last one, temp 100.9 at 6pm the night before, then 99.8 at 6pm just before she started having pups - just 6 hours later........the temp thing is a good go by, but not necessarily the bible.

noon to 2 pm on the last 3 litters--2 different bitches.
finished anywhere from 8 pm that day to 5:30 am the next morning
Mine always go for the whelping crate that day intermittently, finally just staying there. My wife notices the habit and personality change and calls me home from work to deliver them.
You should notice a distinct change in her habits and personality that will tip you off to start watching her VERY CLOSELY.
I always help if a pup seems to take too long in the delivery process. Some may deliver hard for her.
If you have never delivered pups before you need to talk to an experienced breeder on the phone, have your vet or that experienced breeder available for phone consultation during the delivery, and get tips about pup delivery to reduce pup mortality.
