You will never be able to register the litter but if registration is important to you you could register each of the puppies as well as the mother under the Pal program through AKC.  It would not do any good for future breeding of any of the puppies as far as upgrading to a full registered status but it would allow the dogs to compete in every class except conformation and they could earn titles.  But each puppy would have to be registered individually and its a pretty long process with photos etc.  It does help that you know who the sire is and it would be a bigger help if you know who the sire and dame to your bitch was as well. Not the way things currently stand.  Were the parents of the mom registered?  You might be able to go back and get mom registered if her parents were registered, at this point I'm sure you would have to do DNA, pay a bunch of late/penalty fees, etc.  And that's if AKC would even agree to do it.  If you were able to do that, then you could register the pups, but otherwise you are out of luck.
