I use a hog warmer, you can get them from most grain and feed mills. It,s 2 foot x 3 foot and made of heavy duty plastic with a stainless steel cord for durabality. I put it under the pads and it makes a nice warm area for the mother and pups and yes if they are to warm they will move away from it. If it,s durable for a hog so dogs can,t hurt it. I had mine plugged in over the weekend just checking it as I,m going to need it this week with Holly due Thursday on.

My GSD girl is about lean 70 pounds, about 24.5 inches at the shoulder. I plan to make the whelping box 40" x 40". Is this about the right size?  44x44 better?

Is a Lectro large 22" x 28", 80  watt,  about right?

The idea is to make sure there is enough room for all the pups for warmth until third week and also allow them to crawl away from the pad if it becomes too warm, so the whelping box has to be large enough to have zones of varying temperature.

I built mine from a 4x8 sheet of plywood for the bottom with a rail about 8 inch,s from the bottom 4 inch,s out and 12 Inch high sides.
