I was wondering if anyone has used Betadine on your dogs ears? He is losing his fur around his ears and someone said to use this product..Is this earmites? I have another shepherd and a chihuahua and their ears are fine..All advice would be great..Thanks for your help.

I use peroxide..keeps ears clean and gets rid of ear mites..although i don't think you should be loosing fur if its just ear mites....you may have bacterial infection...

It will stain and its VERY drying. Without knowing what you have, I would scrape the ear leather before you treat. It may not even work and make it worse. Ive used it for years for pre op and sugical washing. I dont know if I would use it for what your referring to without knowing what you have.

I have been using it on my horse, who has a small spot of rain rot on her neck....I am told it cleans up bacteria infection (rain rot is basically a skin bacteria)  but for you, I would probably make sure what you are treating before you go using betadine in such an important area such as the ear!

Betadine is basically iodine.  You need to find the cause of the hair loss problem before coming up with a solution.  Betadine is only an antiseptic, and lately more and more doctors and Veterinarians have started moving away from it.  It was used as a pre-surgical scrub, and all-around antiseptic, but the only problem is it destroys healthy tissue along with the unhealthy tissue.

@afwark15: Have you tried using Listerine on the rain rot?  It works better :)

As the others have said...I would find out the cause of your problem prior to treating.  Betadyne is used as a pre-op scrub, but it will burn skin...you must be careful with it's use,  I have treated alot of burns in kids from it's use.   Hope this helps.
