bpworks, could you explain, what was Gus reprimanded for? I am not familiar with this situation. Thanks in advance

S Vargas, Apparently Eik and Antar got into it on the podium, and Gus was trying to break it up, and Gus was bit by his dog Antar. All the information is on the USA website.

According to accounts from people I know who were actually there and witnessed the incident, it wasn't a case of both dogs 'getting into it' as the message on the USCA site would suggest--it was strictly a case of Antar wanting to tear the other dog to pieces, and his handler being (a)unprepared to prevent his dog from exhibiting a behavior he KNEW was a problem long before he got on the podium, and (b) unable to quickly control the situation before it escalated to a point where he ended up getting bitten. According to the accounts from these same people--both of whom are *extremely* experienced in the sport at the highest levels, and who both know the dogs and handlers involved well enough to have not been surprised to see Antar's actions nor his handler's inability to prevent the problem--the dogs themselves never did connect, in large part because the handler of the target dog, Eik, immediately took steps to prevent the interaction by moving away and getting his dog further from Antar. It's ridiculous that the handler of the 'target' dog dog was tarred by the same brush as the handler of the aggressor, when you consider that all reports indicate that the target dog and handler were doing nothing more than standing where they'd been directed to stand on the podium.

I talked with Eik's owner, Terry Macias, at a breed show this weekend. According to Terry the event was much ado about nothing. The situation was greatly overblown thanks to a single woman trainer who tends to be an instigator and trouble-maker. Both men and their dogs train with the same club and are friends. It was a grueling event--with a crowded podium. It's not as if Antar will be used at stud--he's a unilateral cryptorchid. His littermates are also known to have a problem with dog aggression. So, what--so are other dogs. Gus is an experienced sportsman and does not deserve to be singled out for a momentary lapse with his otherwise well-trained, excellent working dog.

I haven't read the ruling, but wasn't this a qualifier for the world team? If someone gets dismissed or discipined from this incident, who stands to gain?

by LaPorte on 14 June 2006 - 05:06

oops, discipLined

by hexe on 15 June 2006 - 02:06

No one is going to be dismissed or disqualified in this particular case, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that USCA didn't have an official policy for addressing such situations at the time it happened. Consequently, no one stands to gain anything in this particular circumstance.
