Yeah, Hexe, that's what I was talking about. I missed what jag posted. I think I didn't refresh recently enough prior to posting.

I also don't believe it's something as simple as genes in that case, either. I was trying to talk to a friend of mine recently about what could be going on in his kennel w/kidney failure. He was at a loss. I told him to look up vaccine lots and wormer lots and see if something could be wrong on that front.

Yes, the dog that needed the transplant was from the same kennel.

The pup who died a month ago from the same litter as the OP's pup died from a genetic kidney disorder. This was first tested by the local vet during autopsy and then sent to WSU for follow up.

i didnt know people were still buying his dogs.
am i crazy, or did he not get in some trouble not too long ago?

by beetree on 10 January 2011 - 01:01

He is probably currently embroiled. I had a spybot email me asking me to assist. Seeing as I have zero contact with this kennel... I am on the opposite coast after all... I never replied to that inquiry.

I understand that genetic problems can present at any time during an animal's life and it is an obvious risk that you could purchase a dog with a genetic problem from any legitimate breeder (or any source for that matter). The issue to me is that Wayne Curry/Kraftwerk K-9 sold me this puppy with a flaw that was easily identifiable. I am not even upset that the dog was for sale but it should have been sold at a lower price with full disclosure of it's condition.

It is possible when the pup left the breeders, both testicles were there.  That happened with a pup I sold a number of years ago.  Both myself and the vet who did the health check felt 2 testicles.  Pup goes to new owner, about a month later they have the pup at the vets for vaccines, can only find 1 testicle.  I took the pup back for other reasons (personal reasons dictated they couldn't keep him) and when I picked him up at 5 months could only feel 1.  A few weeks later I did feel 2, but ultimately he only had 1 come down and stay down, the other one yo-yo'd (more up than down though) and eventually just stayed up when the inguinal ring closed.

All that aside, it's how the breeder handles the issue that really counts, and it sounds like they fell short in this case.

Well whether there was a testical or not it is sad the way the breeder handled this issue. And what Jaggirl posted is very true and for a breeder to find out about a issue as this and continue to breed dogs only tells me that I wouldn't do business with him. In my experience when a testical doewsn't drop at a young age the chances are higher that it won't drop as months go on, although there are those rare times that it will drop

I had an ACD that had both testicles down at 8 weeks when a vet went over him.  I got him at 10 weeks and there was only one down.  The second one did not redescend until he was 8 months old.  I later learned that the grandsire had sired a number of non or late descenders.  I had no plans to breed him due to this and other reasons.   Ironically my boy died of kidney issues at 4.5 years.  I do not believe one has anything to do with the other - just thought it was an interesting coincidence given the discussion on this thread.

What is the latest a puppy has ever had a testcle to back up?
6 months, a year, or more?

I just make it a practice that if the pups testical doesn't drop by about 12 weeks old, then I just don't think the odds are there that the 2nd one will drop months down the road.

The kidney issue with the pup was never said to have anything to do with the pup being cryptorchid. just that Jaggirl wanted the op to know about a litter mate dieing from kidney failure.

I think it is rather odd that a kennel like this one would continue to breed dogs that are known for producing these genetic issues. I would be real leary of buying any pup from a kennel that has a dog with Kraftwerks tied to their name for just that chance it could produce this kidney issue also.
