Because they think they do. Obviously the devils in the details. In many cases they do before they think.

Just a couple of points. On jletchers comments Training as a pre fashioned program, That I posted a number of posts defining what is PERSONAL protection verses Generic protection training. Personal protection dogs are specifically trained to meet the critria that is required for individuals needs. Trained with a planned program that incorporates the client , trainer, and dog, capable of  accomplishing task. A Generic protection dog is one that basically has strong protection tendancys and has some basic bite training at best and basic ob at best. The key to a great Personal Protection Dog is not attack or intervention, but " PREVENTION". If assailant has already popped a cap in you, you will not care if he attacks  and fights till he is dead,because you are already dead. PPD, should be or excell in these areas . Property search, resident search, not with handler but on his own remember prevention , should be able to go any where you go stairs, escalators . A PPD is of no value if he is not with you and his training never stops.And Alboe2009 I agree with you're post. I am very confident , because I'm prepared. And I 'm not a nervous person, I just know people and am not blind to the world I live in.

My answer to the question....Next door to me lives a sex offender.  The wonderful neighbors we had sold /lost their home and the FREAK moved in.  Not only does he attrack awful people to his home.....he still has no remorse for what he did and does.  #2 I personally was assaulted.... (not by neighbor....and  years earlier)and suffered tremendously from sleep depravation.  I was scared of my own shadow, and was afraid to go outside.  My vision sucks also.  I have always had dogs that "protected me" by instinct and bonding.  I wanted the real deal.  To know for sure I could count on the protection.  That comes with a lot of commitment on my part.  Most people don't know that.  I have raised dogs for years...so I knew if I went into training also I would be able to handle the dog.  #3 The serial Killer that lived at the end of my block...just got his sentence dropped because the police f...... up and his rights were violated, screw the fact that he killed all those women.....He has rights for God sake.  He will be able to move back into his home within 2 years.  I live out in the country in a beautiful neighborhood where I have lived for 30 years and have raised horses and Dogs.  I don't live in scumville.  But you can't pick your neighbors........and I went from feeling safe.....to Panic.  This is not a great time to sell my ranch...and I don't want to.  But why do I need a personal protection dog...Because I say I do.  Could I get a gun...yes...would I use it...I don't know.  I don't want to.  I have two shot guns...they complete the picture.  No sneaking up on me to see if I have a pistol in my pocket.  Shot guns speak volumes.  I want a dog that is trained to protect me and himself.  Its great that my other dogs would put their life on the line for me...but that is not what they are trained for......and I needed assurance.  So those are my reasons...and if anyone has a problem with it.....TUFF!!!!!!!

Sounds like someone in your neighborhood has dogs that are allowed to roam free and kill other people's chickens!
