I keep reading all of these threads about this being a requirement, often from people who probably are not themselves trained to handle a dog with real protection training, and have to wonder what kind of situations you are putting yourselves in that makes you think you need one?  I mean, I'm certainly no choir boy but you must be living dangerously if this is that important!  So what is it...did you rat out the mob?  Piss off some bikers?  Pull off the Lone Ranger's mask?

I've said it before and I'll say it again...most crime is that of opportunity and given a whole world full of people to attack and/or houses to rob, a criminal is going to pick the easiest target, i.e., the one without the German Shepherd.  Protection trained or not, if a crook decides you're a good target even after he sees your dog, you need a gun.

So, seriously, can anyone enlighten me please?

I think, many people believe that a trained personal protection dog is one that barks at the mailman or the person walking down the street, which most dogs will do without any type of training at all....So when they  say they need or want a personal protection dog that is what they want, not a dog that is actually personal protection trained dog....I also don't think that people put themsleves in the catagory of pissing off the biker, or rat off the mob... They just want a barking dog, "for incase" someone sees their home or possessions as a target....Like you said, just the having a dog in on the premises is great, but one that will bark is even better, you know one of those personal protection trained dogs.....

I got my first shepherd because my LE husband put a violent vindictive repeat criminal in jail.  He wrote on the wall of his cell, I am going to kill your wife, bald headed M*****F****.  The department took it very seriously and I was given his picture.  Having confidential diver's license and registration is no guarantee.  We lived in the county where he worked.

I got a shepherd puppy who would bond to me as he grew up.  I took him everywhere so that as an adult shepherd, he would be welcome everywhere.

Was it my fault?

Some people do need all the security they can get. Some people just like the feeling of more security that a dog gives them. I dont know about where you live but where I live home invasions are not that uncommon. A dog as a deterrant may not even slow them down or they might be on drugs. Have you ever had someone close to you murdered? I have. A dog might possibly give someone warning and a little time to react. You dont have to rat out the mob or piss off bikers to find yourself in harms way. It can even be in nice neighborhoods if there even is such a thing anymore. Having said that I have seen very few actually well trained PPDs. You have to know what you have and what your dog will do so you can figure out where it fits into the layers of security that you want or need.  If you dont need it then great but dont make it sound like there are not people who would benefit greatly by having a well trained PPD.

Well, some good reasons are listed. You say that just having a GSD is enough. Well some people want more than a visual deterrant, and if you truly have a dog that will do more than bark, don't you think it would be wise to train it and have control?

Aye aye Sporty, I agree.

I also think women are more vulnerable in obvious ways than men.  I know I sure like having a GOOD deterrent with me when I'm out walking alone, which I do often.
