The Delta Society has banned all dogs on a raw diet from particapating in their program. One of their board members is the marketing director for Purina.  Please,if you care about service or therapy dogs and the people they help, give them a call or email.

They already ban dogs that have had any sort of bitework so I have never dealt with them and instead go with TDI if I have a dog that I think is suitable for therapy work

Why would Delta care what the dog was being fed, and why would you volunteer such information to them in the first place?  If asked, I wouldn't answer that question...None of their business what your dog is being fed.

That's my opinion, and I hope everyone tells them so.

Their claim is that dogs fed a raw diet are more likely to transmit salmonella to  humans.  But the real issue is that they get huge donations from Purina and one of their board members is the marketing director for Purina.

i posted something about this a couple or so weeks ago. "coincidentally", PURINA is a big sponser of Delta. amazing that they would not advocate raw diets. glad i'm with TDI. my gsd is a therapy dog and a Reading Education Assistance Dog (i love this and yes, i am proud). he is healthier, i believe, since he's been on  a mostly raw diet. all 3 of my dogs are. hair, skin, etc. i just wish i could feed a totally raw diet. the group we're involved with for READ has a few Delta dogs, but they don't feed raw. i know some whose dogs have skin problems and i think they would probably benefit from a good raw diet, but some people are afraid.

Thank you Angusmom  for being proactive on this issue.  I think we need to stay on this issue before Purina and companies like them, do the same thing to TDI and all of our non-profit dog organizations. Cool deal on the reading program.  I just did two AKC Canine Good Citizen evauluations for dogs going into our local program called Paws to Read.

love my canine, good for you and your dogs! i love the whole concept of dogs and kids and books! i wish i could post pix, but there are privacy issues. but, it is a super feeling watching a little girl reading a book, with your big gsd's head in her lap!

the whole dog journal, which periodically rates dog foods, canned, kibble and raw, just did a "rebuttal" of sorts regarding delta's decision to ban raw. they showed a number of studies (& there weren't really too many devoted to raw & salmonella or e. coli, etc) that showed dogs who were fed kibble showed evidence of these things. so far, the studies are not conclusive and there are MANY things that can affect the results. dogs can pick up salmonella or something from a patient, or the grass outside a facility or another dog, etc. maybe there will be some definitive work done on this, but until i see something hard and true about the negatives, my dogs get raw...
