It is true that some very top Am. s/l breeders now attempt to introduce the German lines into their dogs.  This has very little to do with preference. If it was preference, then they would not have spent the last 40 years breeding away from the German dog.

It is because they have bred themselves into a deep hole and hope the German dog can some way dig them out.

They are not breeding to the German dog because they suddenly wake up to what a GSD should be.

It is because of generation after generation of breeding for gait only, ignoring any semblance of character, ignoring any type health issue if the dog can gait. Generations of awarding Grand Victor, select and championships to dogs with such poor character that they must have an escort into the ring to prevent anyone approaching and spooking the dog. Grand Victors with known elbows that will not certify. Selects with tails bouncing off the hocks.

It is because they have produced such a poor product that shows that at one time had 100+ dogs are now down to 5 or less. Some have gone out of business.

The goose that laid the golden eggs, and supplied so much profit for many for so many years, they have choked.

It is true that one can fool all the people some of the time, but that time has passed.

KCz description of the Am. Show Shepherd is the way it is.

Rik

gsd101, you sound young.  By all means get yourself and American line pup if you wish.  We all start somewhere, and it would be a great learning experience for you.  Try your pup in PP.

All I ask, is you keep in touch with us and tell us how it is going. :)

 I want to say this:

I learned a lot from this forum, I am still learning. I saved a lot of money I could have wasted thanks to many people over here because I made less mistakes and better choices. Here we find expertise in all aspects of dog info. There are people here who offer help with nothing in return while elsewhere others are making a lot of money for consultations whether they work out or not, whether genuine or not. I take the chance to thank and show some appreciations to all the members who offer us help free of charge and free of personal interests. THANK YOU & THANK YOU again and again really and may GOD bless all of you.

hello windborne, It is not my intention to speak poorly of the individual members and dogs who represent the breed well.

I do not feel so benevolent about the stewardship provided the GSD in the U.S. by the GSDCA. Many here do not have experience with AKC/GSDCA.

One thing I feel they may find interesting is that one can become a "judge" of the GSD, awarding championships and determining the direction of the breed, without ever having owned, trained or bred a GSD. They need only pass an exam from AKC to add the GSD to their approved to judge list.

I do meet the requirements set to qualify as a judge. many do, they are not that stringent. Also I have bred/owned and or finished dogs in 3 AKC breeds. The views I have and present are mine, and not gained through reading posts and opinions of others.

There is no need for anyone to try and explain the merits of the American Show Shepherd. They need only present these dogs so good for work and their accomplishments. They need only present the list of health and character requirements for the GSD to obtain the highest awards.

Rik your explanation of the breed is very accurate! I was showing ASL dogs in the early seventies, with lines to Waldesruh, Lance, Wilva Don lines, and Hollarmor Judd. I left this arena in 74 because the temperament was going to hell in a handbasket. Dogs like Cesear v Carahaus that was made GV because of sidegait alone because he didn't have character.
I agree with Ken that there are a "few" of these dogs that will work today, but the day when American lines exhibited good character as a whole is gone.
YOU cannot take exceptions to the rule to make a case of point. The shows do have puny entries, the ASL has boxed itself into a postion of HAVING to go to European dogs. This is fact!! The ASL is considered a travesty by all the other nations in the breed except some of the CKC. Are all these people ignorant to the beauty and correctness of the ASL. I think NOT. Some ASL breeders are trying to improve character with German dogs, but they still want that extreme sidegait, and trust me the character will improve slightly and then the demise will start again, because it is a faulty mentality about what a correct German Shepherd is and should do that is the root of the problem.
