He's bored.  It's either the way you work with him,,,,or it's not his "most favoritest toy in the world".

My bad, I forgot to add that he was done playing with his toy, and he was extremely thirsty.
He loves the toy, he's just tired. Not tired of his toy or anything.
It's actually not a toy ( my bad ) it's a whip, that he loves to chase.
I consider it a toy because he likes to play with it so much.

What a nice looking dog .................... looks like my bi-color ! I think he gets so thirsty because the tug toy and the tennis ball asorb so much moisture from the dogs mouth ..it literally sucks the moisture from the tongue.... dont let him lap up lots of water after he plays with intensity ............. let him drink some to hydrate himself and then a little more later ........... Have fun with him .........................  Regards ................  Greg

Don't "play" with him until he quits or gets too tired.  Always leave him wanting more.
