Hello All, Im looking at some breeders in the Carolinas,USA for a GSD puppy and see that they advertise (URSUS FREE LITTER). Can anyone tell me why I would want or NOT want a URSUS FREE puppy?

If you wanted something to eventually breed to an Ursus line dog you might want Ursus free.

The Ursus Free campagin started a few years ago when it looked like Ursus and his offspring were going to dominate the GSD confirmation world. There were so many well placed animals from this line that some thought there ultimately would only be a few bloodlines to choose from. It appears to some this has occured. The Ursus offspring have made a tremendous impact on the breed. The line offewrs much diversity too. Ursus is far enough back in most pedigrees that his impact is not as strong as it was in the first generation. Many of his traits live on through his descendents that retain his features. Many other descendents have excelled and pass on other traits. So what's the advantage of being Ursus Free? Not sure. There are many that do not favor the line for whatever reason. The success of the Ursus line is well established. Most of the naysayers have quietly silenced their opposition as the success of the line continued and continues.

I have recently decided that I will stay away from most Ursus lines for a while, because at one point, almost every dog in my breeding program had him in their pedigree, thus, every breeding I did would have had a linebreeding on Ursus! While this is not necessarily a BAD thing, it does not give me the diversity in breeding that I want. If I breed one male to a female, and get a 3-4 on Ursus, and then breed that female to another male that had Ursus, I then have a 5-4,5, AGAIN, on Ursus. Nothing WRONG with that, but I would prefer to see some other bloodlines, instead of dogs that all have the same linebreedings (to Ursus). This has nothing to do with disliking Ursus, it's just not getting my lines to where I am headed with them. So, I have bred two females to VA males in Germany (Hill and Quantum) to avoid this issue. I cannot WAIT to see how these pups turn out! I have heard from people who will linebreed on Ursus, then do a complete outcross on the breeding of any of those lines, with good results (as far as they can see so far) So, Ursus free or not, it just depends on what you're after.

What is the full name of Ursus? I am new and have not heard of this dog. Does anyone have a link to his pedigree? Thanks!

Ursus Von Batu. Type that in the dog search on this page. Stephen

I do not see anything wrong with linebreeding on Ursus. I have been happy with my young dogs that are line bred on Ursus. You just have to know why you are linebreeding on him, and also know what other dogs are in the breeding. Just because you line breed on Ursus does not mean that you would produce Ursus. You will have to know what direction you are going with the pups. How many Jeck free litters were bred? One thing that people also fail to put into consideration is this: When you line breed on a dog, you are ot only linebreeding on that dog, but also his parents.
